Anyone know of a foundation that accepts applications for grant funding for historic preservation? A corporation has been created in Marysville to raise funds to purchase the passenger depot from UP. They need another $110K or so by Nov 12 in addition to moneys already raised or pledged and are creating a plan for how the building might be used. If you've never seen the depot, it's an architectural treasure in the mission style similar to, but larger than, the one in Abilene. Many communities have been down this road before during the last few decades (e.g., North Platte, Herrington) and have kicked themselves ever since for letting these gems slip away. As in so many cases, there are multiple issues to overcome (location, condition, etc.) but the benefits, in terms of community re-vitalization, are more than worth the effort.
