Since the Friends is trying to bring in a guest engine in 2010, who will it be?
Santa Fe 3751
NKP 765
Thoughts?
I can't see the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society letting their NKP 765 get that far out of their control.

765 doesnt need restoring, it runs!
They are locating an engine to restore, their comment is, you might be surprised.
just stay tuned.
I know they are trying to restore another engine, that wasn't my question. My question was who could be the "visiting" engine next year as the Friends won't have an engine running next year. Also Mike the Fort Wayne group would undoubtedly run the 765 if it is used as the guest engine so you don't have to worry about it leaving their hands.
The Friends have a pretty good relationship with CP. It wouldn't be beyond possibility to see 2816 pulling some Milwaukee orange next year ...
Those who like to see a true Milwaukee Road steam locomotive pull those nicely painted Hiawatha cars have looked south to the Illinois RR Museum's 265 -- sister to the lamented 261. And the Friends crew would hit the ground running with a good knowledge base about the basic locomotive, whatever surprises might lurk in the boiler or running gear.
Of course we aren't talking 2010 operations with that project. Indeed it is hard to think of any real restoration project that would be ready to go in 2010, so a placeholder locomotive is in order. 765 is my guess.

Well they could brorrow one of the chinese 2-10-2's from Iowa Interstate.
There is a restored / running Soo Line 2-8-2 and 4-6-2 in the area, so one of them could drop in - or both on a double header??
It wouldn't have to be steam. About 6-7 years ago I rode the 261 cars behind a Soo FP-7, DMIR SD-18 and Erie Mining Co. F9 on an excursion run on the Erie Mining / LTV Steel mainline. I could see something like that in 2010, since the Lake Superior RR museum has an A-B set of EMCO F9s and the SOO FP-7, they'd make a nice A-B-A set.

Not likely.
From what I have read, the Empress is undergoing a "maintenance cycle" this year. I take this to mean the 2816 is being inspected or overhauled this year. So no excursions, unfortunately.

Stix has a good point, vintage diesels would be an excellent stand-in. GN 400 (the first SD45 to be sold), if operable, would also be nice.
The International Society of Railway Travelers has been advertising on its Web site, www.irtsociety.com,. that 2816 is to power a Royal Canadian Pacific excursion from Calgary to Vancouver Sept. 1-6, 2010. This does conflict with their own ad in February Trains though.
