Local hospitality around Winton Place & Sharonville, OH?
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, June 20, 2007 1:59 PM

Hey,

I'll will be making the trip down to Cincinatti in the next couple weeks and my friend and I would really like to check out the junction at Winton Place and then the action around Sharonville.  I am just curious what are the "do's" and "don'ts" for that area.  I was snooping around on google earth and saw a little gravel road heading up along the southeast side on Mill Creek towards the tracks and was wondering if that is a no no or what.  I try to be a smart foamer and stay off the tracks and try not to worry the crews at all.  I know that gravel road is where Pentrex filmed their "Sunrise to Sunset" film.

If anyone knows some answers please fill me in!

thanks,

Steve

Steve,

I'm not a local, so hopefully someone from there will also answer, but my one experience with Winton Place was that track access there definetely felt like I was trespassing... and also was too tight for pictures.

I parked in a parking lot of a store (grocery or hardware chain, I can remember).  It was a great parade of trains, and even though it wasn't the best angle for photography, I was happy with the pictures I got.  No one bothered me at all.  Only recommendation I would make, is if you have a tall vehicle, bring that.  The sight line would have been much better if I could have been about five or six feet higher (of course, sitting on top of a van will draw attention to you, that sitting in your car wouldn't).

Thank you very much for the reply!

I guess we will bring a ladder for our adventure! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]  Well, the best thing to do is watch for the "No Trespassing" Signs.  If there are none then it's fair game I guess!  I'll go with that untill I'm told differently.

 cheers,

 Steve

I live near Cincinnati.  Sharonville is OK.  Take the Sharon Rd exit off of I-75 and head west on Sharon Rd for about 3 miles. You will get into Evendale and see a crossing.  There is a really nice place to park and film.  You might see a one or two an hour.  I have a couple of mpg's I shot there this past spring.  Always other railfans there, too.

Do NOT go to anything named Winton (Place, Terrace, Woods, etc.).  Not safe.  Nor is Queensgate area (downtown).

IMO, You will have a much better trainwatching experience in Northern Kentucky (20 min south of Sharonville).  Walton KY is a really good place to see some busy NS and CSX stuff. I think it's the Mt. Zion Rd Exit off of I-75.

PM me if you want more details.
