The first Map of the Month consists of two maps on facing pages. Page 72 features a map showing the lines radiating from Chicago, and detailing tonnage figures for 1971-1972. The second map is nearly identical, but the tonnage figures are for 1999-2000. Along the bottom of the pages is a chart comparing the 18 separate rail lines shown on the maps.
2. Union Pacific Railroad, trains per dayNovember 2001 issue, pages 86 and 87
Trains magazine began their Map of the Month series in the October 2001 issue, and to date have published over 100 maps in the series. These maps cover a wide array of subjects, including freight and passenger railroads, both in the past and the present. The staff at Kalmbach is now in the process of making these maps available to registered subscribers online, downloadable in PDF format. Currently over 30 of the Maps are now in the reference section of this website.
I am putting this list of the maps together so people can find maps they are looking for, or subjects of interest, in their collections at home. As well I am supplying links to the maps in the reference section. This leadoff post has a chronological list of the complete series, while successive posts will cover two maps each, with a paragraph or two describing each map.
