My hometown, Newport, PA is an excellent train watching location. It has Norfolk Southern's (fomerly Pennsy) Pittaburgh Line running through. It has roughly forty trains a day (a modest estimate). It is 30 miles north of Harrisburg. The best place in town is the "Oliver Township Park", which is a fully safe and legal place to access. It is a public park right along the rails, and a block signal can be viewed easily.

Thanks for mentioning this - I never knew that, or even that it was there.  Usually going by fast on 322, to/ from the curve or places further north and west - like last weekend.  Next time I'm out that way, I'll have to stop in and check it out.

Oh, one more thing - at least 2 Amtraks a day - the Pennsylvanian, EB in the morning Mon. - Sat., late afternoon on Sun., WB midafternoon 7 days, if I remember correctly.

I'll second Newport is a fantastic place to watch trains! Welcome to the forum, and be sure to check out the Gallery section of the October 2009 issue (you should be getting it in a week or so).
