What are your Favorite Railroad Nicknames?
Posted by vsmith on Thursday, December 18, 2003 11:04 AM
I'm partial to nicknames road employees gave railroads usually based on the letters painted on the tenders or engines.

I would love hear how others refered to different raillines. I'll start:

My favorite is from the Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railway,

NCNG....Never Comes, Never Goes.

What others are there?[8D]

   Have fun with your trains

Western Maryland - "Wild Mary" because there was no room for tangets in the curves. They were focused on getting freight over the mountains and valleys as fast as steam power can do it. Even at a cost of a few broken drawbars and a few dizzy crew.

I know of several good ones:
NYO&W - either "Old Woman" or "Old and Weary"
NYSW - either "Squeak" or "Susie-Q"
Lake Erie & Western (became part of NKP) - "Leave Early and Walk".
The daily commute is part of everyday life but I get two rides a day out of it. Paul

There used to be a shortline in what is now the northwest suburbs of Chicago called the Palatine, Lake Zurich and Wauconda. The railroad was built late, poorly capitalized, and suffered so many mishaps that the locals called it "the PLZ and Walkback".

Well the nickname I like isn't as clever or a joke like the trend of this thread is but I've always like the the Katy RR (MKT: Missouri Kansas Texas). Actually, I find it interesting that they ignored the M in Missouri when the nickname became Katy (K-T).

Take that Missouri!

With regards from your Kansas neighbor [:-,]

Also,
the Oregon-Washington Railway and Navigation Company, successor to the ORN above is known as the "O-Dub". One of the better of Uncle Petes Yellow Perril lines. From Huntington west and Portland north and to Canada via Spokane and the SI. (Do we need to be careful about that red lettering on yellow paint folk getting us $5 a pop for using their name???)

Pacific Railway and Navigation Company. Formerly the Tillamook Branch of the Slow Poke (but it did get there), now the POTB --- Punk Rotten and Nasty.
