This seems odd

I saw a train today with a couple of Cemex boxcars (CEMX 5000 series). What is odd is that they are 50', excess height cars, perhaps ex-CLC cars. Without looking up the density of cement, I would expect that there is considerable unused space inside of these cars, espicially since Trinity Rail Group offers a 40' boxcar for palletized cement service.

They must have got a better deal on these than on standard height, 50' boxcars. Then there are the SP/Golden West Service 40' boxcars built in the 1970s. I have heard reports on this forum that some are being scrapped. Perhaps they are worn out.
