You can take Oklahoma off the list of States of those who don' like trains. Like so many of others responding, the present residence is not the first. Started out in Omaha, moved across the river to Council Bluffs when I got married, then to Lincoln, on to Huron, down to Hutchinson, and finally to Moore. Lets see, thats Nebraska, Iowa, Nebraska, South Dakota, Kansas, and last of all-Oklahoma. Still root for the Huskers. Lehigh Valley area of Pennsylvania "the railfan state". Mine as well call it New Jersey since most of the people hear moved from NJ in the last year. I live in one of fastest growing areas in the US. We moved from NJ a few years before the major growth.

Originally from Indiana; grew up in So. Cal., but most recent home was Mississippi. Am hoping to relocate there--permanently.

Meanwhile I live in San Diego area, where the trainwatching fare consists of "Coasters," "Amtrak-California" and some "Metrolinks." I see an occasional BNSF freight, but that is rare. Most recent sighting of interest: KCS run-through power on a northbound BNSF mixed freight at the Oceanside Coaster/Metrolink loco servicing facility.

Hey Jim, shortly after I posted that, I found where you guys have been hiding the real humor. I was up until after 4 AM, and only got as far as page 5, but it damn near killed me.[xx(] I was laughing so hard, [(-D]I could barely breathe!

Please don't get me wrong, I'm all in favor of humor, anytime , any place. The world would be pretty dull without it.[zzz]

And so, in the spirit of fun, and in keeping with the geographic theme of this topic, I hereby declare:

Open Season on Hawaii

I personally have nothing against our 50th state or the people who live there, but face it, with the exception of hauling sugar cane, Hawaii is very "railroad challenged".

In an effort to attract more railfans to his state, the congresssman from Hawaii has sponsored a bill seeking funding for regional rail service.

The first phase of the 14 trillion dollar plan would connect Hilo on the big island with Honolulu on the island of Oahu. The 250 mile proposed route would connect 4 islands, by means of 2 tunnels totaling 60 miles, and a 10 mile bridge. In an effort to keep construction costs down, all would be single track. The estimated cost for phase 1 is 1.9 trillion dollars.

Phase 2 would connect the newly established Island Line with San Francisco on the mainland. Engineering costs on this project will be substantial, as this tunnel will have to pass through 2 geologically active zones. The scheduled completion date of the nearly 3000 mile tunnel, is set for early 2019, barring any funding delays. [8D]

If anyone else has any ideas to help Hawaii with its railroad troubles, please feel free to jump in.

Southern Cal here but thinking of getting out after college. I might move to my relatives' home state of Connecticut after I graduate this year (my grandma lives right near the NE Corridor in Branford) for grad school.
But in the meantime the getting's obviously quite decent here. My college dorm overlooks the Hemet Branch of the BNSF in Riverside (smoggy city about 60 miles east of LA).
