What was this 1950s stick shift engine?
Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, April 1, 2007 10:46 AM

Several times in the 1950s I saw a stick shift engine pulling a passenger car at Northwood, Iowa on the Rock Island main line from Manly to MSP. It appeared to be a local passenger service.

From the sounds, it was a diesel engine with direct drive to the wheels, with a clutch and different gears.  It sounded like a big truck taking off from a stop sign. Can anyone identify this engine please? (NOTE: I don't recall if this engine also had a few passenger seats or if they were all in the passenger car behind.)
