Wow. Kinda hard to believe such a big tiff erupted over a hot dog.
I actually liked the KCS grey (or the white for that matter). I would, however, agree that the hot dog scheme might look better on an E or an F unit. Unfortunately, those motors are long gone.
Back to my french fries and ketchup.
or my hot dog.
or my ketchup and mustard.
okay I'll stop now.
nice paint for sure....boosts company moral a bit when a brand spankin' new locomotive goes by fellas workin on rr. they have a bit more pride too, in company.
most of the public i know of.....if a newly painted engine goes by not much is ever said ...but they sure like some of that there graffitti painted on box cars and auto racks. that catches their eye more than the engine.
ROFL! Love it Solz! Meh, I guess I'll just enjoy looking at the grey engines while you can. Cant wait till some of these get dirty, the paint chips, and they get fire damage! She'll look like a million bucks!

It would be easier to discuss this without the name calling too.

1st, I personally don't fancy paint schemes on freight trains. Passenger trains - there's another story.
You nailed it with your last statement above. Fancy paint jobs with lots of masking costs a lot of money compared to dip jobs. I'm wondering how loaded the engines are on the inside. Of course they should raise their pay scale... who doesn't like to be paid? Someone wanted a new image for KCS - that's fine. All I'm saying is who will even notice? Railfans, employees (depending how rested they are..) and maybe... anyone else? Some people think this means improved customer satisfaction... but the customer will be jus as happy when one of those old UP leasers comes to switch the cars.
It's been fun. But it isn't much fun anymore. Signing off for now.
The opinions expressed here represent my own and not those of my employer, any other railroad, company, or person.t fun any

Using big orange letters is not mature. Calm down, or you'll have a heart attack before you hit 20!

Morale? How about treating the employees as the professionals they are? That would improve morale more than some stupid red and yellow engine. It shows that some foamer manager cares more about how an engine looks than their employees. All that masking adds to the cost of the paint job, which is less money for other improvements. But hey, at least they used Mexicans... that will REALLY improve morale! IT IS JUST PAINT, people.

Zugman,
Since you live in PA you of course know how the KCS treats its employees. So it will come as a shock to you that my many friends and neighbors who work for the KCS (T&E crews and shop men) are proud of the Company and pretty well satisfied in their jobs. They certainly don't look down on or feel threatened by their brethern who work for the KCSdeM.
Let's see, you don't like Mexicans, railfans or railroad management. Did I miss anything else? Are you also a regular contributor to CSX Sucks?

Just having the employees notice alone would be justification enough.
The self proclaimed "tightest ship in the shipping industry" just redid its logo and keeps it's equipment spotless. Why?

Anybody in Arkansas see the KCS Covered Hoppers released from the American Railcar Industries Plant on March 22nd, 2007?
Do the KCS Covered Hoppers actually match the KCS GEVO?

There are a couple of photgraphs of the first covered hopper over on the Trainorders Forum. It looks very nice. Yes the paint scheme is complimentary to the locomotive scheme, but obviously somewhat simpler. Mostly Dark Brunswick Green, with large Stop sign Logo, larger than normal KCS reporting mark in Red-Lined Yellow, Red and Yellow stripe along the bottom edge of the body
Thank You for the tip.
I looked it up.
The new KCSM Covered Hoppers do match the new KCSM Locomotives.
Hopefully all those markings are retroreflective decals that have a non-stick film.
With all due respect, I never said a word about how KCS treats its employees. I said that more money spent for fancy paint is less money for other improvement. (better cab interiors, better running engines, better track that doesn't throw you around, etc etc.)
I don't like seeing work done in Mexico, period. Whether it is painting GEs or making Hershey Bars. I have too much pride in this country. There is only one reason to do anything in mexico - cheap labor. If your friends do not see that as a threat, then they should take off their dark safety glasses.

Zugmann,
With all due respect you should learn the facts before posting messages which show your preconceived biases. You apparently don't know that the KCS operates over a thousand miles of trackage in Mexico (the former TFM) as its wholly owned subsidiary, the Kansas City Southern de Mexico. The KCSdeM runs from the International bridge at Laredo, TX to Matamoros, Tampico, Mexico City, Lazaro Cardenas and Veracruz. For this reason, NOT because of cheap labor, it is quite natural that KCSdeM work be done at their shops in San Luis Potosi.
You will probably be surprised to learn that the new US locomotives of the KCS are being painted at Metro East Industries in E. St. Louis, IL!!!

Really?
And you honestly belive that?

Finally we agree on something....
Looks like we'll agree to disagree....
Looks to me Harry, that you made a point that you could not back up, and now are trying to play nice.
But it will be good to let this thread die.
UH OH! HOT DOG !!!

On a different note-I don't get the hot dog references, but, as in the past, it may very well be something off a TV show, and I don't watch TV.
