Maine Eastern Railroad pushes 2007 season ahead
ROCKLAND (March 16): Maine Eastern Railroad announced Friday it is gearing up for an early start to its 2007 passenger excursion season.
That same day in Freeport, Senate President Beth Edmonds, D-Cumberland County, unveiled a $40 million rail bond that could eventually bring train service from Portland to Rockland.
Maine Eastern Railroad officials attended the unveiling of the bond proposal that would fund rail improvements on the Pan Am (Guilford) Line between Portland and Brunswick. The improved track would enable the Downeaster to continue from Portland to Brunswick and make possible a passenger rail connection via Maine Eastern Railroad to Rockland.
This bond bill would provide $39 million to the Northern New England Passenger Rail Authority to be used for capital infrastructure improvements. An additional $1 million is being made available to the Maine Department of Transportation for capital infrastructure improvements for rail currently used by Maine Eastern Railroad.
