Honoring Osawatomie’s railroad history and the significance the industry played in the growth of Kansas is the focus of the city’s first-ever Railroad Days celebration next month.The event, scheduled for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 14, will serve up an assortment of activities from a downtown sidewalk sale to varied railroad museum displays in the Missouri Pacific Depot Museum, said organizer Grady Atwater.During the morning, downtown merchants will offer special discounts during the sale, while railroad museums across the state will set up informational booths inside the depot museum all day. Museums and excursion lines expected to attend include the Great Overland Railroad Museum, Topeka, the Abilene and Smoky Valley Railroad, Abilene, and the Old Depot Museum, Ottawa.Other activities include a spring craft show in the American Legion Building, as well as bake sales offering cookies, cakes and other treats at booths downtown.“We want to make this as much of a community event as we can,” he said.“The purpose of this is to honor the railroad workers and their families and celebrate Osawatomie’s and Kansas’ railroad history. It’s very important to honor the railroad.”
