How does it work?

Mapquest says it is 600 some odd miles between Hutchinson KS & Edelstein IL. The question is how does the UPRR change the crews of trains that are running the BNSF transcon? Does the same rules apply to the crew as if the train was running on home rails? Is special permission needed from the union for the UPRR to run these trains?

The UP has crews based at Fort Madison, IA to cover the trains from Kansas City to Chicago. I don't know where the crews are based that cover Hutchinson, KS to Kansas City, it could be at either end. There is nothing special about the arrangement, the UP doesn't need permission from the unions for this.
