well there is a steak and shake just inside of 469 in ft. wayne and a few other spots too.they had a poll in our paper about which restaurant do you want to come in next.however when we railfan we try to find a local hole in the wall place like the shovel in marion the 2 toots grill in toledo.Lesters in Bryan also.Nora took us to a place near conway too that was good.In deshler we go to the country kitchen.I do agree though it is a nice place to eat.

Don't get me started on pizza -- that rant could last at least an hour. Chicago style is good, to be sure, but if you grew up in New York, the junk that passes for pizza here in Wisconsin is pathetic. First clue: if the pizza guy cuts a round pizza pie into squares, run away. Quickly.
My co-workers may chide me for saying so, but when I'm out railfanning, I won't go out of my way to enjoy a steaburger at Steak 'n Shake. I'd be just as happy with a meat & potato burrito from Taco John's.

I'LL ADMIT STEAK'n'SHAKE IS PRETTY GOOD! BUT IF YOU GUYS ARE GOING TO GET OUT AND DO SOME HARD CORE RAILFANNING, YOU NEED TO FORTIFY YOUR CHOLESTEROL LEVEL; IF YOU GET DOWN AROUND MEMPHIS, YOU CAN GET YOUR GREASE FIX AT A LOCAL ESTABLISHMENT CALLED DYER'S, THEIR HAMBERGERS ARE DEEP FRIED. It actually WAS called the Five Seasons Center- Freudian Slip? Now it's called the US Cellular Center. I've been to a few events there myself. Probably not in the same genre as you, though (John Denver, Barry Manilow, Barbara Mandrell, Kenny Rogers, etc.).

Steak n Shake is pretty good. I must admit they are one of my customers. If you see one of their big tractor/trailers with BIG graphics of burgers, shakes, etc...give a friendly wave and notice the excellent four color resolution of the graphics!
That being said....Culvers is very tasty. Plus, how about "Butterburger" for a name of a burger?
My favorite Chicago food is either Italian Beef or Breaded Steak with red sauce (both are excellent at Ricobene's under the Dan Ryan on 26th) or a hot dog at Best Kosher outlet store on Pershing Avenue. Or maybe it is the Maxwell Street Polish (loaded with onions) at The Depot on 31st street just west of the NS overpass between the Dan Ryan and Halsted. When I have the calling for chicken I find the nearest Harold's Chicken on the south side. Harolds makes the Colonial look like a Private First Class. For an Italian Sub it is Bari's Deli on Grand Avenue. At noon the wait is often 30 minutes. World class. Fiori's Deli is just about as good and the wait is only a couple of minutes. Good soup too. There is nothing like watching a live fish beheaded in Chinatown. That's fresh!
I am going to take a stand here and say there is no better place to eat GREAT food at low prices than in Chicago. The high end stuff is pretty good too.

....Count me in on the Steak 'n Sheak "cult".....Good steak burgers and some of the best french fries one can find. Milk Shakes made with "real" ice cream too.
Found our first one in Daytona Beach, Fl. in 1961.
Then for years after that had to hit the one in Castleton, In. to satisfy the hungar and now for several years we have our own right here in Muncie.
Even find one now over in Zanesville, Oh. as we make our way back to the home land of Pa....

As a west-suburban Chicagolander who doesn't mind most fast food, I'll say that we like both Steak-n-Shake and Culver's (We were taught about the latter by our daughter, who was going to school in Wisconsin before Culver's spread to our environs).
Around Chicago, Portillo's is the place for good hot dogs, Italian beef, and charcoal-broiled burgers (salads, too--and some of them offer some pretty good fall-off-the-bone ribs, too!). They have enough of a cult following that a Portillo's has opened in Buena Park, California--daughter and son-in-law plan on taking us there next month. (Said daughter sounds a little like the guys in the article! Before finding a husband, her goal was to visit all thirty-some of the Portillo's restaurants in the area--fun, given their decor. She made it about halfway down the list before being swept off to California.)
Other good places for Italian beef are Buona (I like their barbecued beef even better--and so does Nora!), and Al's. We just found out about that one when they opened in Downers Grove--with a pretty good view of the Racetrack. Pat says the food's OK--I just chow down; my mind's out the window.

I'd read about the Kult of the Steak n Shake beginning back in the 70's. Being in Oklahoma & Texas there weren't any. Not until my oldest boy and I were driving to St. Louis in 2002. He spied the Steak n Shake in Joplin, Missouri, pointed it out to me and said "We gonna' stop?".
We did and the rest is history. The whole family went to Tulsa for the opening of their first Steak n Shake.
If you find yourself in Muskogee, Oklahoma, check out one of the "My Place"'s for Bar-B-Que, El Charro for some good Tex-Mex or Pisano's downtown for good New York style pizza.
Now we live in Orlando, Florida and we've got our choice of Steak n Shakes.

I love Steak 'n' Shake, too, but for something a bit more drive-in I really like Sonic. The burgers taste like burgers and they are always innovating with their drinks--limeade, for example.
Also, Sonic uses car hops!

Poppa Z: Who needs Sonic when you can get a sack of White Castles's 'sliders' any time you want them?...Followed by you favorite cure for heartburn! That mention earlier in the Thread of Ricobene's Italian Steak, [on a big roll with red sauce], started me to salivating, and it's been 20 years since I had one! ... Some years back I worked for a truck line about 2700 Archer Ave, and Ricobene's would deliver! WHAT a Treat one of those big old sloppy sandwiches was. Heaven!
