I like both shots, but Erik's is lacking something. I think a time exposure yard shot is a great idea but very difficult to pull off. The blurred southbound boxcars are an excellent way to add the "action", but I feel like it needs a crisp image in the center, if that SD-40 would have been standing still I think you may have had another winner.
That being said, kudos to Mike for the black loco in the night. It looks great and won my vote.
I am going to go with Erik on this photo shot. I love night action in the yard. The IC GP40R's I am able to see all the time.
Mike: Better luck next time on Volume 63!

While I like Erik's photo and am biased towards yard shots...
There is a lot of stuff in it to look at, both the moving trains, the tower itself, the people and the vans...interesting, but nothing in the photo jumped out and smacked me around, saying "Hey, look at the trains!"...Mikes photo does just that, it shouts "look at the train"...

I too, liked Mike's photo the best. By the time I got to pull up Trackside with Eric and Mike, the voting had ended, but oh well, things happen, don't they. And Eric, your photo was very good also.
For what it's worth, my first vote in this thread went to Mike. Technically both are good, but that IC unit felt like it was about to run me down.
I'm partial to black locomotives anyway.
