Rail Rage
Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, October 26, 2003 8:50 AM
OK, we're all familiar with air rage, but what about on trains? Does anybody have any stories about passengers on a train getting out of hand?

I thought of starting this thread after picking up the latest issue of The Railway Magazine (what British people read instead of Trains). There was a section talking about the huge problem in Britain of passengers spitting at railway staff. This problem is so big that on some railways' staff have been given DNA collection kits! (Yes, really!) They consist of latex gloves, cotton swabs and a plastic bag to put the evidence in. Witnesses to the spitting are also asked to sign the bag. The sample in then taken in for analysis and entered into the national DNA database to find a match. It's kept on file in case the person does it again.

I can only hope that this doesn't become a problem over here, but with all the terrorist scares you never know what could happen.

I have only seen one case of Rail Rage if you want to call it that. I was riding home on P392 or the Amtrak Illini from Carbondale to Chicago, Illinois. In the cafe car they sell alcoholic beverages and this passenger got unruly after having quite a few. Needless to say they stopped the train in the next town had him get off at a crossing there with that towns cop waiting for him. The name of the town skips my name as this was about 5 years ago.

LOL!! Sounds pretty mundane to me...

Try riding NJT for a few months, you'll see a LOT worse than a little spitting. For example, a drunk whipping it out and watering down the car (passengers included), a 16 year old girl doing a strip tease for her boyfriend, and everyone else and a female passenger doing the "Jerry Springer" thing, taking off her top, to avoid paying her fare...

And those are just a few of the tales of the Naked City...

Oh, and if I recall correctly, last year a group of three adults, a married couple and the brother in law were arrested on the LIRR for having a threesome in full view of the other passengers.

A few years ago, the JK teacher at the school I work at took her class for a small trip on VIA/Amtrack from St. Catharines to Niagara Falls (a 15 minute ride). This one adult passenger travelling from Toronto to god-knowa-where would not move up a few seats so all the kids could sit in the same area. This idiot threw a tantrum when the conductor told him to move. He wouldn't move, so the teacher took her two worst kids, sat them in the seats behind the guy, and told them to continuously kick the seat in front of them. Buddy moved within a few minutes...

I would be curious to see a follow up on these items. Did or have the courts meeted out any punishment, or has our society become too "laid back" to care? I better stop now before the soap box comes out.

The worst I ever heard was a young guy heading home after the Taste of Chicago. He was drunk the car was crowded. He got hot opened the emergency window and stck his head out. His head struck a signal bridge and I will leave the rest to you imagination.

Of course they had to leave the train there for the police. They pulled another train up and transloaded the passengers. A few miles down the line two guys got in a knife fight. They wonder why the collectors all lay off when the Taste of Chicago is happening.

I majored in criminal justice and have my bachelors degree and I can see ways that this DNA collection would not work in the US. A railroad might try it but once they get to court they'll be some smart lawyer out there that will challenge the professionalism of this technique. Is the agent certified? qualified? Did they do it right? Under what conditions did they collect the evidence?

I know the airports swab carry-on items. My teacher said she's been to the airport and on 3 seperate occasions the same guard always insists on swabbing her purse. This old man, she says he must be 90, is certain that he's going to find drug residue on her purse. He does this to her everytime she goes to that airport.

Whether you know it or not, everyone that has handled paper money probably has drug residue in their billfolds, pockets, and hands. If you get pulled over by the police on a routine traffic stop and they had a drug sniffing dog that went crazy over the smell of your money you could be arrested and you possibly could forefeit all you cash and your vehicle under some forefeiture laws in some states.

The difference between the police officer and the railway agent is the police are trained and qualified whereas a US railway would have to train and qualify its agents if they expect their DNA evidence to hold up in court. Also, I don't know how any US railway would want their agents going to court to testify all the time. It's a police officer's job and duty to show up in court to testify. If the officer doesn't show up the case could possibly be dismissed, depending on what the charges are.

As far as railrage is concerned the only thing I've encountered are the passengers angry that the train is 5 hours late and once a couple got into a verbal argument that lasted only minute.

Here's the article on the LIRR incident from the CNN/Law page:

HEMPSTEAD, New York (Court TV) -- A 40-year-old registered nurse was found guilty last week of public lewdness for engaging in a ménage á trois with relatives on a moving Long Island Rail Road train last September.

The jury determined that Dennis Greene copulated with his sister-in-law, Francine Greene, 40, while she was performing oral sex on her husband, Lyle Greene, 41, a plumber. Dennis Greene denied his involvement in the sexual escapades, saying he slept through most of the ride.

The three were busted by LIRR cops in September after engaging in a group sex act during an early morning train ride from Manhattan. Several disgusted passengers complained to the conductor, but the Greenes carried on even after the conductor told them to stop, authorities said.

During the trial, Terrence Fitzgerald, an assistant conductor, testified he saw Francine Greene sitting between the brothers. She and Dennis Greene were partially clothed. Fitzgerald informed the conductor, Warren Beale.

The sexual shenanigans finally ended at the Merrick, Long Island, station after police boarded the train and arrested them.

Lyle and Francine Greene previously pleaded guilty to public lewdness. All three each face up to 90 days in jail when they are sentenced May 9.

Fort Myers Beach Florida, I.e Close (20 minutes) from Cape Coral and Sanibel Island ?!?!?!?! what a small world!

Yeah your probobly right, it's a good thing that doesn't happen.. i'd run every single red signal and collide with a freighter pulling out of the yard or somehting!

If any of my surperiors are watching: That was a joke and would never happen. [:D]

Oh and about that Thong thing, to put it VERY diplomatically for various reasons, one of them being not that far away from me, I think that kind of thing happens to THE BEST of us, Including me...

Kevin,
How is it that you say "what a small world"?
Have you been to Sanibel and Captiva Islands?
I go there at Christmas time. I go for the shells[;)] NUTS MY WIFE! [B)][:(]

I can't tell you how many times I've been laying on the beach and some females will come off from the street and pull off all their clothes and put their swim suit on right there infront of me. Of course I look BAMM [B)][:(!]
Everyone likes eye candy! [B)]
The last time I was walking out onto the beach at Fort Myers I happend to look into a cabanna and there was a Aussi woman topless. I was so shocked I (inadvertantly) shouted "hey she's topless"[8)] She jumped strait up and covered her breasts with her hands and said something in her accent. [B)]my wife nailed me again. I deserved that one. I should have kept my mouth shut!

Soo-

You have to keep your mouth shut about such things...I have been happily married for 15 years+. The trick is, good nights out with the boys and occasional fun on business trips (railroad). Nothing illegal or immoral just begin alive. A few beers with the boys scoping the terrain features (hills and valleys so to speak) will take ten years off your age.

Tough to get the time for it on a RRing schedule, but now that I can hold a decent job life is good.

LC

P.S. There are some really great clubs in south Florida. GO see it all and explore the "wilds". Guaranteed to cure what ails you...

Our school makes the boys wear long pants all the time. Even in hot weather![:(!] But the girls can wear skirts, they even get away with them short ones. The cheerleaders even wear there uniforms on game days.[8)] I've got to talk to the principle about cracking down on the girls and enforce that dress code![:D]

well, since we're slightly veering off track.....interesting "sites" from the rails.....there's some place on the CP Vaudreauil ("Voe-droy") subdivision just past Montreal West where there's a swimming pool near the tracks...and some women's swim classes were held there....needless to say many trains were "following non-existant slow-orders" so the engine crews could get a better view. I imagine the same thing would happen if any nudist resorts/colonies/camps were ever near train tracks.

Indeed. One line I run occasionally (the regular crew has a LOT of years seniority) runs by the shore of a lake. Frequently, in the summer months, bikinied women will give us a "flash" as we pass by with our unit coal trains. The regular Condutor on the job has some excellent binocs too...

Used to be a nifty nude beach north of Santa Barbara which was briefly visible (if you knew where to look) from the train. Always interesting to see the reaction of passengers![:D]

The Vaudreauil SUBDIVISION.......runs from west of Montreal West until around Dorion (where it splits into the M and O subdivision and the Subdivision that Goes to Smith Falls). Most subdivisions are named after a single place.....but they can be miles long. I think the actual "spot" was around Montreal West.

I just can't figure it out ?????
Why go to Florida when you have all that nice beach off Newfoundland.
Unless of course your afraid of the Newfies. They are a tough lot.[;)]
