I hope i'm not annoying anyone with my endless posts and questions.
But i have another one!
What's the difference between Low and High front hood locos? Whats in the high hood that's not in the low hood? is visibility really bad in High hood units?

While at the RR Museum last week I took a pic of the inside of the low hood. I will look through the pics and see how it turned out. If it is good I will email you a copy of it.

depends which unit they ran.I got another one for you alex.N&W and the southern railroad(NS now) used to run their trains long hood forward.this ment the cab (as you read this) was on the right instead of the left.keep asking questions!

High hood units are not that bad to see around the range is about 1-2 cars in front of you that you cant see. other wise its not hard to see. ( that is going around a curve.) in the nose of this hood is the toilet . that is it. in the short hood the toilet may be there in some units and you haft to turn around and climb down into the nose to get to the toilet not easy or fun ( when you haft to go its almost impossible) go to another unit. Now to answer the next question... after some thinking they decided to put the toilet on the wall next to the long hood side so you can just walk in. with out climbing down. also the horn on these high hood units is right over the toilet area and it is loud and if you are not ready for it will scare the ... well lets just say you wont be reading very long in there.

In many of the earlier units there was a steam generator in the high hood. On the CNW, when they chopped the hood down, they put the toilet in the low hood. Quite a squeeze to get in there, plus you cannot stand up. easier to pee over the side (of course, we never did this..........)
