Back on line today. Lost power for 31/2 days account a wench named Isabel. I love the sound of a long freight train roaring by at track speed, but not when it's roaring by at the treetops. Here in the Mid-Atlantic, nearly half of the local power company's customers were out of action the day after the storm hit. Four days after the storm, still 1/3rd of customers out. There was high water in parts of Baltimore where I've never seen it. The storm surge arrived with high tide...6 feet above normal! A nasty business. They had linesmen in here from Canada, Maine, Ohio, Kentucky, Florida and I don't know how many other places. Two were killed; one from Georgia, and one from Mississippi. Lord Bless all of 'em. Someone from NC or Virginia can speak to their own situations.

I can guarantee you that if you move to Nebraska, you will never have to worry about a hurricane! But you would have to put up with the lights out occasionally!

Lincoln proper has never had a tornado. And while it would happen, it hasn't in about 150 years, so the odds are good it won't. However, a foot outside Lincoln could be another story, so plan to live near town!

Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Mississippi, Lousiana, Florida...lots of trailers, therefore lots of tornados. Nebraska apparently not as many. Mobile homes weigh less than a brick and mortar structure, so it creates a local area of low pressure which attracts this weather phenomena.

So next time you watch a CNN story about the path of destruction from the latest tornado, notice they always show a trailer park that has been upended....

Now as far as hurricanes go, they are low pressure systems, and tend to gravitate towards the high density of homes, particularly condos and resorts along the NC outer banks and VA coast.

Have a story regarding Hurricanes. I do a lot of people tracking and postal regulation enforcement on correct addressing. Had a tussle with a gentleman that lived on Top Sail Beach - he wanted his address one way and the PO said that was incorrect. I couldn't convince him otherwise.

So a hurricane came along and took away Top Sail Beach.

Moral of story - don't mess with La Mook!

I think I've spent a fair amount of my career running from hurricanes, typhoons and other things that go bump in the night. So since you are 1) related to mother nature or 2) actually mother nature using an alias, I will not mess with M la M.

Speaking of weather and CNN

When the American Airlines planes crashed in Little Rock about 4 or 5 years ago killing the pilot and some of those on board, the news reported that people at home watching tv had better weather reports than the pilot did. NOW WHAT IS WRONG WITH THAT PICTURE? At the time of the crash and just before it we had heavy rain, bad lightening, strong winds (blew trees down) and the power was off and on. I heard the explosion (working at the airport) and thought it was just a transformer blowing up. Not a good deal.

There was another thread asking about damage at Sandpatch but people were not posting much there about the storm. I had also wondered if the railroads had any weather related problems out east.

Best not to rile up the Mookie - altho I would have not taken the entire beach, just would have ruffled his front mat a little. Such a waste, but I don't think they ever rebuilt out there. Anyone from that side of the country know for sure?
