Trucks from Mexico: Hurt RR's and Trucking?
Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, September 21, 2003 11:01 AM
As you may or may not be aware, back during George Bush Sr's Administration, a bill to allow Mexican Trucks on U.S. Highways was introduced. After Clinton was elected he promptly vetoed it.
Now with Bush Jr. elected he brought the bill back, which resulted in the AFL-CIO filign suit to delay it.
However, time is running out, and when...not if the Trucks are allowed in...will it hurt American Trucking and Railroads?
I feel it will hurt both industries and cost more Americans jobs.
In addition, there is the safety factor as these trucks are not even close to the sub-standard many American 18-wheeler are supposed to attain.
Thus, in the following order...here are the big job killers for Americans right now:
1) U.S. Auto makers continue to move manufacturing to Mexico
2) U.S. Manufacturers continue outsourcing production to China
3) U.S. Corporations outsourcing 1 of every 5 Information Technology jobs to India and Malaysia.

I feel based on the above facts, that loss of American manufacturing hurts the railroads.
Loss of I.T. jobs, means that the largest consumer spending group (I.T. workers) will be spending much less, thus the trickle effect of less consumer spending hurts all industries.
Mexican Trucking means less work for American Truckers...think of it as the transportation Industry's version of I.T. outsourcing to India, i.e. "They can do it cheaper".
What do you think?
Oh yes...the Corporations will make more money and have their stock price go up. But will the Middle Class even have any money to invest at that point due to loss of jobs?

You've hit the nail on the head. When our business people finish moving all the jobs out of the USA, we'll have no money to buy the stuff they want to sell us. Beats me why they can't see this. Guess they can only see the very short term, and this is going to cost us and them dearly. Their short sightedness is creating a downward spiral of decline in what was once the world's greatest economy and military power. If things keep going in this direction, we'll be buying our tanks and missiles from France and China, subject to cut off if they disagree with us! One day, at the current rate, we in the USA will be even with the rest of the third world, and maybe that's the goal!

It's a bad deal all around, it will mean more job losses for American's, I don't expect these trucks to be very safe either, we as Americans need to vote out every congressmen who votes for this whether, they are Republican or Democrat. You forgot to mention thousands of accounting, customer service, human resource, claims handling and engineering jobs are leaving. What scares me is I haven't heard any of the candidates address this seriously. We can't all work at Mc Donalds or for the government. Where's Ross Perot when we need him?

Actually the only thing keeping el Presidente Bush from getting his way is the Supreme court which has blocked this misguided policy from taking place, so the impact of Mexican trucks in the USA can be studied, the Bush administration is fighting to have this over turned. I'm a Republican, but I have to say we all need to really watch this guy he is doing some really terrible things to the middle class. Luckliy his push for eliminatining overtime for most middle class workers was stopped last week, but barely. What is a crime is how little press coverage these major issues are getting. instead we are bombarded with Scott peterson or how Madona and Britney kissed each other on MTV. Something is really wrong.......Bush is also pushing again to give legal status to millions of illegals, yet we here almost nothing about this bill being sponsered by two Arizona congressmen.
