Got called for a U.P. Hiring Session, but.....

Thats the good news....but as Murphys Law would dictate, it was an automated call with an electronic voice, and I couldnt make out the name of the hotel I have to go to.
Even worst, when I went to turn off the 2 PC's so I could hear, the voice said something about accepting or rejecting...and then I guess because it had said it 2 or 3 times already while I was turning the PC's off and trying to hear it said "goodbye".
Argh...so now I dont even know if I accepted, rejected the invitation and whether I should book a flight and go or not...I dont want to show up and be told I didnt accept over the phone with the automated message.
Also, there is nothing on UP's website for a contact and I have not received an email confirming this at all.
I am not sure what to do.

Well, perhaps you should try calling UP. I found the following numbers on the website without difficulty.

Try asking for the Sourcing department or Human Resources. Tell them you have been notified of a hiring session, but due to a bad connection couldn't get the right location. It is imperative that you make contact with a human being...

i also got called,i live in canada at the moment,i got the phone messege on the 9th sept,the session was in missouri on the 9th sept , only about 1200 kms away a little more notice would have been nice,now the number i needed to ring is disconnected

O.K. Ney, heres my .5 cents worth. I got this book called "Interviews for Dummies," before I hired out. Don't know if it helped, or if it was my natural charm, yeah right! RRs are big on safety, be realistic, but let them know that you ARE NOT A RISK TAKER! let them know that you work well with others, let them know THAT YOU ARE WILLING TO RELOCATE, these are their biggies. Do not come across over enthusiastic. Tell them that you have allready scouted lodging in the area in case you are offered a position (I told them that when I hired and they liked it). Let them know that with your military experience that you can take instruction and are rules compliant. Prepare a couple of questions for the interviewers. Do not let on that you are a railfan if you are. Tell them that you are looking for a career with a future. They usually will ask you, "Why do you want to work for the UP?" Lie and tell them that you have been told by other UP employees that the UP is a good company to work for and that you feel that you would be an asset to their company. This is some of the crap that I spouted when I hired out. Which part of Mo. is the position for? I may be able to help you find a place. I am in K.C. Also, don't give up if you don't get hired. Try again. It took me two hiring sessions. The first was for 2 positions and there was 1 woman and 1 RRs son in the session. You can figure the outcome of that. Tell them that the RR interests you. Oh yeah, I think that the UP uses the same style of test battery as the BNSF. Math, Reading comp.,and a "personal safety inventory," type thing. Some of the questions refer to how you function in traffic (road rage....etc. personal conflicts...) I answered opposite of what came to mind....hehehe. It sounds like you have made your descision to take it in the shorts and hire out.......so, good luck to you!

To be honest, what you cited is exactly why I am interested in UP.
An "admin" for one of the corporations I worked for had a boyfriend who worked for UP and then CSX.
I became friends with him, although I have lost contact with him over the years...all she ever said was how much he "loved" his job for the RR and UP.
I have always wanted to work for the RR but for some reason never pursued it...hearing the good and the bad from him was what first got me thinking about it.

Oh, yeah. I forgot to mention.....they recommend that you dress up for the hiring session. Not mandatory, but it couldn't hurt to dress professionally. They also recommend to lose the earrings, etc. if you sport this stuff. That's what I was told by the HR dude when he called me.

Hhhhmmm, now I am really confused....maybe I will bring two pairs of "quick change" clothes.
I doubt if you have to wear a suit...how about dockers pants and a polo style shirt?, i.e. business casual?
