"GE" on an SD40-2?
Posted by Railfan1 on Sunday, July 30, 2006 3:45 PM
While out the other day I saw a BNSF (ex- BN) SD40-2 (#6807) and it had "GE" on the front of it (near the front steps on the engineer's side). Does GE rebuild EMD locomotives perhaps? What does it mean? Anyone know?

That would be a first. Like putting a GE cab on an EMD Locomotive,LOL. That would be cool to see.

GE has been owning and rebuilding EMD locomotives for years . GE also has a good sized EMD lease fleet .

GE sells a kit to upgrade EMD SD40-2 and GP40-2 locomotives to meet Tier 0 emissions, what you are probably seeing is the EPA required sticker that certifies the locomotive meets Tier 0 emissions standards.

Plenty of SOO Line SD60s also have them. Ive seen numerous SD40-2s, and a WC GP38-2 with that sticker too.

Every once in a while, I will see a former SP SD40T-2 that has GECX on it. It is nice since the GECX is usually the only alteration to the paint job, but not as nice as seeing a pure SP SD40T-2.

The IHB GP40 series (4010-4019) and the rebuilt SW1500's (1500 series) were all rebuilt under a contract with GE.

I have also seen such a rebuild ID sticker on at least a few of the EJ&E SD39 units rebuilt about two years back (I believe).
