On the topic of dumb comunication between coworkers--- Two workers trying to assemble a piece of machinery: The first one said "hit it right there". The second one did. The first one came back to work after he got the cast off his finger. True story about a couple of many-talented maintenance men. TRAINing is fun, but not always fun for everyone. Work and play safe. No Yellowducky, you didn't kill it. It is still here but breathing kinda hard and slow. It may still live. I hope it does. That is why I made the post just the other day to try to save it. We had alot of fun here in this thread. We still can. The Humor thread has kinda taken away from this one and some other ones too. But maybe it will survive. Time will tell. [B)]

(Jim getting out the soapbox and dusting it off, setting it down, and climbing up on it)

Folks, your not gonna believe this one. Illegal immigrant workers are now going to sue Wal-Mart for violating their American Civil Rights. Give me a BREAK ! I say take the chinesse rail wagons and load these "people" in them and send them back where they came from. Yes, this one has pulled my chain. And the worst part is they probally will win the way the courts are today. Millions of our dollars are already being sent out of this country into other countries and doing nothing to help the American economy one bit. And now they want to sue. Yes the land of the free is now the land of the come over here and get it because it is free to you. Never mind the fact that me, you, all of our kids and their kids and their kids are gonna half to pay for it. Uncle Sam has deep pockets when it comes to giving out our money for "people" across the ocean. But what about here at home. Sorry, YOUR MONEY is not available to help you. It is going elsewhere. And now they are putting our their greedy little immigrant hands sueing Wal-Mart. Where do they get off. (I know where I would like to see them get off ! ! !) You know I don't mind helping someone who needs help. But when do you cut the cord? It is time to stop the handouts for overseas and handout some here. It is time to put the army on the border to stop the illegal immigration and in so doing stop a possible entryway for the terriorists too. Enough is enought and I had my enoughs. Let me go on the record as saying I am for paying fair wages. I am for paying overtime. I am for treating the employees like people. But as for sneaking into this country I am not for. I certainly am not for people sneaking into this country to harm our people or steal jobs from them. And I do not condone lawsuits such as this one. Just Thursday I made a post against crossing accident lawsuits. So why would I even think about supporting this lawsuit. Wal-Mart in not one of my favorite retailers. As a matter of fact I try to avoid going there when I can go elsewhere and get in and out much quicker. My Wal-Mart NEVER has enough checkers on hand to handle the customers. I don't like narrow ailes jamed with merchandise and people. The store hours are getting less and less all the time. They now close at 11 pm. They used to be open all night and THAT was when I did my shopping. I have other issues against them too. But I still do not support this lawsuit.

Hi Jim,
What they are sueing for isnt all that much..
Because they are illegal, Wal-Mart pays them a lot less, and they are not allowed to purchase insurance.
Now, no matter where your from, legal or not, if you do the work, you should get paid, and enjoy the benifits assocated with the job.

The economy in Texas, and most of the border states would suffer a lot if the mexicans didnt come over here and do the jobs most Americans refuse to do.

How many illegals install the computers and controls in airplanes like you do?
Not many, but I bet the guys who cleans your bathroom at work is a illegal.

They are our maids, ditch diggers, roofers and farmworkers, all dirty, hard jobs that require hours of manual labor that Americans dont seem to want to do.

If Wal Mart hires these folks to be stockers, or warehouse workers, and at less than minimun wage, then they should be sued.

American laws are not just for Americans, they apply to everybody in this country, citizen or not.

They have to, we cant have two sets of law, one set for us, and one set for them.

The law says that there is a minimun amount to be paid to anyone who works on a hourly scale, period.

Not a amount to pay illegals, and another amount to pay citizens.
Just the one amount, for everybody.

Now, I am all for jobs staying here in America, but sadly, there is only so much money in the pot, and if the companies cant find Americans to screw the clocks together at the wage they have to pay to remain profitable, then their only choices are to close the business, or sent the products elsewhere to be built.

So, if you dont want or cant afford to pay a American $12.00 per hour to pour concrete or dig ditches, but you can pay a illegal mexican worker $5.50 for the same work, guess who gets the job?

Was looking at a demographic chart, and found that, just behind Texas, Chicago has one of the highest population of illegal mexicans, followed by LA.

Seems the garment industry hires as many illegal cloths workers and Texas hires ditch diggers.

So we are stuck.

We cant find American workers to do this work, not at the wages they demand.
Our affluence has done away with the "working poor" in America, and our standard of living precludes American workers from accepting less than a certain amount of wage for their efforts.

We have a entire subculture of American citizens who have not been, or ever will be employed, living in a welfare state, all of who have cellphones, credit cards and drive fairly new luxuery cars, and somehow seem to have a disposable income, yet no employment.

And America seems to be ok with that.

On the other hand, we have access to a huge workforce that wants to work, at wages much less than the legal minimun, who walk miles and miles to get to a jobs that would break almost any one of "us" who tried it.
And we sneer at them, because they are illegal.

Should our laws not apply to everyone?

Should our law protect the slob who only gets off her butt to go cash her welfare check, and use her food stamps to feed her 6 or 7 illegimate children, but ignore the "illegal" mexican who lives in a shanty town, and walks 2 or 3 miles to catch a bus, that takes them to work, where they clean our houses, mow or lawns, dig the ditches and pour the concrete that we drive on?

Last time I read it, the preamble to the US Constitution didnt include a disclamer that said "these laws apply only to American Citizens"

We Americans seem to suffer a sort of tunnel vision, as if there is America, then the rest of the world.
What we have failed to grasp is that, even though our standard of living seems to be higher than any other country, the fact remains that we have become a consumer drived economy, not a manufacturing driven one.
So the jobs of screwing the clocks together, or pouring the casting for your cars engine block goes elsewhere, where earning $5.50 a hour is a good job, and you can live on that.

Its kinda like the BSAF comerical, we dont make the cellphone, we just use it more.
We dont make the computer you are using, we just type on it.
Most, around 95% of the stuff inside your computer wasnt made here, and if it was assembled here, bet on it being put together by someone who earns a lot less than you.

If these people are working for Wal Mart for less than the legal minimun, then Wal Mart, one of the American sucess stories in retailing, is commiting a crime.
Regardless of who they are commiting the crime against, citizen or wetback, its still a crime.
Our law says it dosnt matter who, what, or where you came from, the laws here protect everyone equally.
It does say there is a minimun amount any company is allowed to pay anyone in hourly wages.

The Civil Liberity Act says the same thing.

It dosnt matter what color your skin is, where your or your parents came from, what language you speak, or the clothes you wear, this is the standard we, as Americans, follow in the way we, as a nation, will treat people.

If you cross our borders, no matter where you come from, the security blanket of our laws covers you.
You are protected from crimes against you, especially those crimes that are based on where you come from and the color of your skin.

Thats one of the things Dan is out there flying your bad assed jets to protect.

We have become victims of our own sucess.
We have become so efficent at making the few heavy products we still build here, that we no longer need a class of working poor, and our blue collar workers are suffering the same fate.
Assembly lines that once employee a hundred people building Amana refridgeraters and microwaves now only need three people, to watch the robots and make sure the computer is still up and working.

Our culture has taught most that if you dont have a cellphone, drive a Lexus, and sit in front of a wide screen plasma TV, your must be a poor person, or not a good American.
So our workers have decided that if they can't find a job that pays enough to buy these thing, they dont want the job.

And most of the shrinking group of working class Americans cant afford these things working at the wages American companies can pay.

I earn $23.63 a hour to switch rail cars.
But, after adding in the cost of insurance, tier one and two taxes, and all the other cost associated with hireing an employee, the Port spends about $450.00 buck a day to employee me.
Now, because we make over $500.00 per car switched, that isnt a huge cost.
If I switch 3 cars, we paid all the cost of myself, the helper and the engineer.
Of course, the cost of fule, track, and such isnt included in this simple example, but you get the idea.
But if the amount was any different, or the cost of switching cars went to $250.00 per cars, then I would have to accept less, either in wages or benefits, or go find a different job.

Now WalMart is a retailer, and they opperate on about a 2% profit margin.
What they really sell is space.
Every square foot of their stores has a value.
Thats why you see the "hot" items crammed into the shelves.
If a product dosnt sell within a few weeks, its wasting retail space on that shelf that could earn money for them.
Thats why you dont find sewing supplies there, but you can buy the in fad clothes.
You wont find alternators or carburators in their automotive section, but you will find batterys and tires, oil and oil filters, because these things move quick, with a short shelf life, where a alternator will sit there months before its sold.
Its a completly consumer driven company, and the turnover of the on hand stock is unbelivable.
They empty their warehouses once a week.
If they didnt have a constant supply of new stock on the way, they would be empty in a few days, and out of business in weeks.
They must have manual labors to unload the trucks, sort the products, and stock the shelves, machines cant do that job.
Most Americans wont do that work, its hard, hot and physically demanding, and even at above minimun wage, I dont think I could live like that.
But here is a group of people willing to, wanting to do this job, and the company that hired them is screwing them out of the bare minimun our laws says they must be paid because they dont have a green card.
Not real sure that what I consider the American Way.

Our legal system and laws says everyone is entitled to certain rights and protection, no matter who you are.

Would you want it any other way?

Think about it!
Stay Frosty,
Ed

Ed

I agree and I disagree. [8D]

I very much believe in fair wages. I am not a big fan of the current day Wal-Mart. I also believe our unprotected protected border is a welcome matt for all who want to wipe their feet and walk through the door. About 2 months ago there was an article about the Border Patrol, the Park Rangers, and the crime in the U. S. National Park System. The National Parks, especially the ones in states that border Mexico, have become a haven for illegal immigrants and believe it or not terriorists. The Park Rangers are lightly armed and are few and far between. However, on the other hand, those others folks aren't. So folks from many other countries wipe their feet and walk in. The article stated that the parks used to be a beautiful and SAFE place to vacation. Now they are not. They might still be beautiful but they are not safe. I once saw a "COPS" espisode where the Arizona Highway Patrol pulled over a van with illegals packed in their like sardines. They contacted the Border Patrol to come get 'em. The answer from the Border Patrol was let them go, we don't have a agent that can get them or a place to put them. Sad , but true.

I very much believe in fair play, fair wages, fair this and fair that. Years ago there was a shortage of service workers at places like McDs along the east cost. So to get workers they upped the hourly wages. Then the workers came. When business/industry can't fill the positions open then they will raise the pay. As long as their are people willing to work for low pay ie the illegal immigrants, then wages will stay low. I once had a roommate who worked in poultry processing. Now these jobs are becomming filled more and more by illegal immigrants.

I wouldn't put it past WallyMart to subcontract these people. I wouldn't put it past them to pull dirty tricks in their retail trade. THEY DO. (My opinion based on other articles I have read.) Wal-Mart has greately gone downhill (and many other American places) since Sam died. He was a humble man and fair in his dealings. But as he gave up more and more control of the daily workings of the company it went downhill.

Let's be fair in our employee dealings. Let's hire those who are legal to work and pay them fair. As for the others, send them packing.

It is time to guard the border much better than has been in the past. We must even begin to watch the Canadian border much better. Not because of Canada or Canadians but because of "others" who would use that lightly patroled border to illegally enter this country and do harm here.

I agree with you too.
But how about this.
There are jobs that, for whatever social or political reason, Americans now view as beneath them.
So, instead of making the process as long and drawn out as we do, shoot, lets issue them green cards, and let them in to do the work, and pay taxes into the system.
Why do they come here illegaly?
Because the motivating factor is total poverty.
Most of them have kids, and they want a better life than what is available there.
By the time they fini***he current process to get a green card, and be legal here, years have gone by.
Hungry kids dont wait.
So they come here any way they can, and take any job offered.
As for Walmart, for me, it sorta symbolized what going "wrong" with American values.
We dont expect or demand quality anymore, what we expect is quanity.
I can actually remember when McDonalds sold food that tasted like food!
Now, I wouldnt buy a thing from them.
I remember when grocrey shopping was done at a local market, the goods were fresh, and your money stayed in the comunity.
Now days, it Sams, or Walmart, or Costco, the big warehouse stores, and your stuck with what they can buy in truckload quanities.
I dont like Walmart to much myself, because they dont sell to many things I want to begin with, and I still like to shop locally, I get better service.
Sure, I spent a few dollars more, but I get it back in service, which you cant find at Walmart.

As for the illegals, well, they have been here all along, it isnt a new thing.
They are, for the most part, law abiding people, who just want to work.
No way we could patrol all of our border, nor would a fence slow them down one bit.
So, lets include them in our system, make them the new "working class" if we must.
You cant stop them from comming, you cant jail all of them, we dont and cant afford to even really try.
And too many American business depend on them for cheap labor in the first place.
Dont think there is any one solution for this one.
But do think our laws should apply to anyone within our borders, regardless of how they got here.
Its either one law for everyone, or our Constitution isnt worth the paper it was written on.
