Brooklyn yard, Portland, Oregon
Posted by a737flyer on Monday, May 8, 2006 9:41 AM
On Saturday...mid day, I think, a single locomotive pushed five unpainted RDC cars into a siding in the Brooklyn yard and left them there for a while. Later in the day, they were gone. Were they the ones used in the Portland-Astoria tourist route that were sold after labor day 2005? Where were they going? Who is going to operate them. Anyone know? The website is www.Western.com and is a bit strange in that they are not accepting new members. Anyone know the details?

There are three of them, all former PGE passenger equipment. They are owned by the State of Oregon and were (and I believe, still are) destined for Commute Service between Wilsonville and Beaverton that will be starting up, they hope, next year.

These three cars have been stored at Linton on the P&W and moved to Brooklyn on Sunday morning. Don't know where they had them heading. This is the equipment that was used on the Lewis and Clark Explorer.

Thanks a lot...too bad about that Astoria service. I sent along a note to the State of Washington to try and boot them into some cross-Cascade service between Seattle-Tacoma Yakima, Wenatchee and Spokane. I thought those RDCs would be good for that. I just returned from a trip from Tacoma to Boston via Amtrak (and then to NYC on Acela) and around the NY metro area by train and found our transportation infrastructure here in the west sadly wanting.

Hey, I just wanted to thank you for turning me onto this website for the webcam. I used to live up in the Portland area and ever so much loved the railroad scenery up there. Now I watch it everyday at work.

Side note: check out the right camera shot towards downtown Portland, if you look at the buildings it looks like there are flying cars. They are actually on the I-5 Bridge.

The "Explorer" was just a three year special operated by the State of Oregon for the celebration of the Lewis and Clark Bi-Centenial. The cars were then to go straight to the commuter operation -- but the Feds delayed that move by a year or so. The commuter thing is now a "go" again, so, maybe............

I really enjoyed seeing that old SP unit pu***hem into that track. With the oscillating head light still working was even more of a bonus!

10000 feet and no dynamics? Today is going to be a good day ...
