"BOXES"?

I was listening to my scanner today and all day long they just kept talking about checking the "boxes". It took them all day to get a total of about 20 miles (they would keep telling where they were at). What could this be? Forgive me if it is a stupid question. [:D]

BTW, it is Norfolk Southern's Main line.

This is just a guess. Could they be checking the battery boxes for the signal / gate gear to make sure the batteries are good.

Was it a train crew talking or MOW workers? If it was a train crew, mabye they were having hotbox problems, but it would seem that they would set the bad order car(s) out, not keep fighting them all day and only getting 20 miles. If it was MOW workers, I would second Chad's suggestion.
