Trespassing on NS property....BEWARE
Posted by MP173 on Saturday, April 22, 2006 5:54 PM
Just heard a conversation between a westbound coal train and the dispatcher which was kinda interesting.

The crew mentioned something about "cows being on the right of way near MP 482."

The dispatcher responded back "you are reporting that there are cows trespassing at milepost 482?"

I wonder what kinda punishment, other than the obvious, cows receive for trespassing?

That conversation made me put down the BNSF Proxy and listen a little closer.

It is surprising just how often NS crews report trespassers.

I have a pretty low key presence when I'm out railfanning, it's a REAL rarity that I would be on the right of way when a movement is rolling by .]

But when listening to the local dispatcher from my home via web radio it is often amazing how frequently I hear road crews report trespassers in spots that I myself railfan nearby

it would be fooli***o assume that I never get reported, given the reports I hear about others. .

Cows? now THERE would be a sticky mess to have to scrape up

And crews often talk to the Dispatcher via cellphone, and the DS may do so with the Railroad police, so listening in on the Scanner will not be foolproof for someone who is choosing to go into spots that are off-limits, hoping that the scanner will give a heads up that the calvary is coming......

In France this would be called a protest

"a heads up that the calvary is coming......"
Frequent (and understandable) mistake (appropriate around Easter):
calvary: mount where Christ was crucified;
cavalry: mounted military personnel;
Calgary: city in Canada.
(I ain't gonna tell you how old I was before I learned the difference!)

So you'd often run when the Calgary was coming? Interesting...funny how it fits into this thread, though.
Everybody calls it 'cowtown'

No, just the other day, I was listening on the scanner and a DS asked if a road crew had a cellphone. When the reply was 'Yes', the DS then asked the crew to call her...

I suspect a crewmember chatting at length with his girlfriend would be frowned upon, but I'd imagine there's no problem using them for official business. Not much different from a local crew getting their permissions via landline from the yard office.

On the other hand, seems like I saw a section in the NORAC rules banning unauthorized electronic devices, so your MP3 player is out.

I think sometimes they use the scanner to spook railfans away. Happen to me at Penn Station Pittsburgh two nights ago. I was taking shots of NS Helper Set C7A at 3am waiting for the Cap Limited to come in. I was on the Amtrak owned platform but the helper set called the dispatcher and said that I was taking pictures right in front of them on the RoW. Dispatcher said he would call the cops.

I wanted none of that so I gave him a wave and walked back towards the Amtrak station. After that, C7A called the dispatcher again and said I must have had a radio because I took off.

Got down to the Amtrak side of the platform. When I got there, the Amtrak crew cracked some jokes at me, told me to be safe when taking my shots, and went on their way. PS- the cops never came and I got some cool shots of the Cap pulling into the Burgh
