Best Railroad Movies (topic rehashed)

Does anybody remember John Candy and Steve Martin riding "Contrack" in Planes, Trains and Automobiles? I loved the paint scheme on that train. The train breaks down and the engine starts to belch out thick black smoke. While many people would think that that's a cause for alarm, it's important to remember that the engine was a C-425 and Alcos just smoke a lot. (In all seriousness, though, I don't think even an Alco would be capable of smoking that much unless it was on fire.)

I'm surprised that no-one has mentioned -- not a movie, but a television series about a train!!

In fact, a Supertrain!! Which was a SuperDud!!

It was supposedly a atomic powered transcontinental train that ran on tracks about ten feet wide. It had an olympic size swimming pool. There were about three or four months worth of episodes. It was essentially an attempt to seize on the "Loveboat" motif.

It was ridiculous. The only episode I saw was the first one, which was a story about a mafia hitman trying to kill someone on the witness protection program who was moving to Los Angeles from New York and took the Supertrain. Steve Lawrence played a starring role, as did Dandy Don Meredith of football fame.

There were some neat shots of the Supertrain model running through the countryside, however.

I well remember the "Runaway" ski train that was shown in the early 1970's, in which the brakes on the train froze and so the train went licky-split down the mountain, but were caught from behind by someone in a new locomotived who managed to couple on to the train and save it from crashing into the station.

One other made for TV movie that was funny -- I don't remember the name -- but it was about a group of oldsters in a nursing home (Sunset Acres?) who stole a locomotive and several cars from a railroad museum, headed out on the mainline, and eventually went off on an abandoned track up to an old mining town. Pretty ridiculous, but it was fun. After the oldsters had been caught and returned to their nursing home they were busy making plans on how to steal an old ocean freighter and head out across the ocean.

I just wanted to thank everyone for posting in my "Best Railroad Movies" thread. [:)] Now it doesn't really matter to me if it is a movie or a video. You know they both come as VCR tapes (for a while longer anyway), are both played in a VCR player/recorder, and are both viewed on a screen. As long as they feature trains they are both worth watching. And my purpose in starting this thread was for forum members to be able to share what they thought was interesting/good viewing. Now that might be a movie, it might be a video. Who really cares as long as it is about trains? Some of the movies are not very good. Some of the movies are great. The same can be said about railroad videos. Some videos even tell a story. But hey it really doesn't matter, if you saw it and liked it then feel free to let us know--that my friends is the intended purpose of this thread. Now I think I have some catalogs to browse through. [;)] [}:)] [:D]

Trains mag is a REALLY good book, as is Model Railroader and others. I also think Trains video on intermodal is a good movie as are other home videos. Gosh, theres so many internet videaos that I like anbdthey are ALL good movies. Big golly gosh- I like all of them movies!et al.

I just saw Under Seige 2: Dark Territory for the first time when it was on TV last week. I can't say that I really enjoyed very much, I guess it wasn't really my type of movie. But, I really loved the paint scheme on the train in that movie!!!!!! The wreck scene at the end is certainly interesting.

Also, I found this picture on the internet. It shows two BC Rail M420's painted up for the filming of Atomic Train. I posted this here so that you can get a look at them without having to waste valuable hours of your life having to see the pitiful movie.

RUNAWAY TRAIN is my fav.
Takes place in Alaska, and actually filmed on th Alaska Railroad!!!
Has four locos:
1. on the point is a gp40-2 (#3010) still in service on the Alaska Railroad today.
2. second is an F7 (#1500) its numbered 500 for the movie, it was the first f unit in service in alaska and the last to be retired in alaska(shortly after this film)
today it is in the Museum of Alaska Transportation and Industy (MATI)
3. & 4. the two rear units are GP7's (third loco is unumbered thru the entire film, however the rear unit is #1812 (changed to 812 for the movie) no gp7s are in alaska anymore

I saw Ruaway Train when i was 5 and is the reason i'm into trains today.
The director of this movie really captured this train with such an artistic fashion. the story is alsoreally good, there are so many underlying themes,the acting is so good that Jon Voight and Eric Roberts were nominated for Acadamy Awards. another cool thing is the ambient music that plays during these huge shots of alaska with this small train piercing through it. Whats really great is it's mezmerising ending that will leaved you thinking for a while. It kept me thinking for 20 years now!!!!!!
