Baldwin & American Locomotive Co Builders Plate

I recently acquired an American Locomotive Company Builders Plate #71981/Schenectady Works-1944, as well as a 1940 Baldwin Builders Plate #62347 and am having difficulty in obtaining any information regarding their background. Any information would be greatly appreciated
