Accidental Trainwatching
Posted by tree68 on Friday, March 31, 2006 6:33 PM
There was a fire in a junkyard in Solvay, NY today, across the (CSX Chicago Line) tracks from the NYS Fairgrounds. Live coverage on one of the local Syracuse TV stations was being shot from the fairgrounds, across the tracks, and included an eastbound stack with a UP in the lead. The reporter commented that "ten trains had gone by", although I didn't hear the timeframe. Not surprising - that's a busy section of track.

I did notice that the train sounded a lot of horn (there were fire trucks, and firefighters, near the tracks. Normally they are pretty quiet through there.

The heavy smoke from the fire caused some problems for an event going on at the fairgrounds, but there were no injuries. That said, it means the smoke was blowing across the tracks, no doubt giving the train crews a nose full on the way through.
