I'd like to see a webcam in downtown Pacific Missouri where the Union Pacific and BNSF meet and run side by side.  Amtrak goes through town four times a day on the Union Pacific line also.

   I'd suggest a cam at Sunnyside Yard on Long Island; I think it would be interesting to watch trains being made up and taken apart.  Or perhaps one in New Haven, where several different railroads have equipment passing through.

A camera in New Mexico (?) ran into problems because the employees objected to having people watch them work.  Much different than simply watching trains go by.

Watching caboose-less trains full of containers pass by isn't nearly as entertaining to me as it used to be.

This is why I like the Deshler cams - with trains not only running across the diamond in all directions, but also "turning the corners," there is a great variety there.  

And even if there's no trains, the chat that runs alongside the cam screen can be entertaining, especially when someone who doesn't understand railfanning wonders why the cams exist in the first place.  

There are a number of knowledgeable folks who know the train symbols and understand railroad operations who will gladly explain it all the uninitiated.

At this point in time, it's probably better to make requests through the various YouTube channels. Lots more railfans and viewers there. These forums really aren't that active in the overall scheme of things.

Pine Junction, Indiana where they get an incredible number of trains.

Closer to home would be Greensboro, NC on the Norfolk Southern mainline. A lot of good trains pass through there...

The only place, in my opinion, that a camera is worthwhile for freight action in Canada is at Portage la Prairie where the CN and CP main lines cross. There is no other place in Canada that really has that volume of freight in one spot.

How about four webcams one located on each corner of the "diamonds" that lie above the intersection of Wells & Lake Streets in downtown Chicago.  Among the Lake-Englewood, Lake-Jackson Park, Ravenswood, Midway, and Evanston Express trains, there's a lot of action at that interlocking.

Another great location would be on that high round-mound that sits between main tracks nos. 2 and 3 just a short ways east of Dale Junction, Wyoming (UPRR Laramie Subdivision).

Downtown Laramie, Wyo. on the pedestrian bridge.

Or, here's a novel idea:  strategically place a web cam along a broad muli-track curve somewhere on the layout located inside The Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago.

Get one at anaheind station on Metras MDW line. They have too small a ump yard so that means trains being built are done like this:

1. consist pulls out of siding

2. switch is made so consist A backs up into Consist B

3. combine two consists

Repeat

 

I always see old geeps and SDs pulling aa far as quarter mile out and then go back into the yard.

It's in the Netherlands. Didn't see it posted on this thread. This cam comes complete with streaming video and audio, it visible 24/7 and has extremely heavy traffic volumes.

Freight trains are very short comapred to our standards, about a max of 45 cars and there are a lot of small commuter movements. I have noticed that during the night on weekdays freight traffic is heavier than during the day, but overnight on the weekends there seems to be no traffic at all.

If you don't mind the length of trains, and horns not being blown over crossings, then you could sit here and watch the 100+ trains for hours and never get bored because as soon as one goes by, another ones a comin'.

Actually....(of course I am dreaming here) but, it would be cool if there was a whole network of Chicago area webcams.  There is so much action in this area, that on any given camera, something would be happening.  One could watch trains all over the Chicago area, from the comfort of their living room.......  Wow, what a concept.    Gee, I wonder how much money it would take to maintain all of the cameras..... Hey, it could even be a subscription based thing, so it would be easier to pay for the maintenance of the cameras, and servers, and routers, and computers, and bandwidth.......   A couple of the cameras could be shown for "free", and a  subscription based on either yearly or monthly payments, and a couple of the cameras could be, you know, like "pan and zoom" and in each location, have a camera facing each direction, so the viewer can see all of the action.  The cameras could be a higher quality than is the norm for better pictures.  Oh, and even feed audio from the AAR channel for that particular railroad, or subdivision, and kind of make it like, an entire "experience"....

Oh, one other location:  Missouri Valley, Iowa where the UP's mainline splits - the old CNW passenger line down to Council Bluffs and Omaha and the Fremont cutoff going west along with the CN's Iowa Division mainline that parallels the passenger line down to Council Bluffs.  Awesome!

Daggett, Calif.---all the BNSF Transcon, plus all the Union Pacific's LA&SL.  Seeing it in person is a treat, but the Mojave Desert is brutally hot this time of year.

Personally, I'd like to see webcam installed on the FEC at the New River Drawbridge in downtown Fort Lauderdale. Maybe even two webcams...One facing nb and the other sb. This is scenic, double track territory with a plenty of traffic. It's also well lit at night and meets are common.

This idea has been thrown around on the FECrailway Yahoo Group which I'm a member of. The biggest obstacle being... Who'd host it?

I would like to see a web cam put some where here in wisconsin like maybe on the amtrak/cp rail line between milwaukee and chiacgo. I think that would be pretty cool to see trains up close and not get in trouble for trespassing. Or even some where on the UP line. Would be really cool to.

Bayview Junction, in/near Hamilton ON would be one, since the area is largely surrounded by the local botanical gardens, it couldn't be that [;)]difficult to set one up there. I think just about any busy spot would be great. BUT..........I would love to have one with streaming audio!! Just think how nice that would be. Espicially is the camera was near a crossing. You could leave the room and listen for the bells!!!

Selkirk or Dewitt on the CSX Chicago line. There is a foot bridge over the east end of Dewitt. Don't have traffic counts, but casual observation is that the line is pretty busy.

For any and all suggested locations - fixed camera (Rochelle), or controllable (Ft Madison)?

And a key point, especially for the really busy routes, frequent updates. I like to visit Rochelle, Ft Madison, and Galesburg (although the Willis Steel camera controls are off-line) in no small part because I'm actually watching trains, not snapshots updated every 5-15 minutes.

I have to agree with the UP swing bridge at Clinton. Also the triple track mainline out in Nebraska, etc. Never a dull moment out there. Missouri Valley, where the UP, goes south to Council Bluffs and Omaha, or West to Fremont and then on to North Platte. Really Busy there too.

How about having LIVETRAINS.COM come accross with the two new ones they have been talking about and are mentioned on their web site an dhave been for about two plus years now. Other than that, how about at the Naperville, IL Amtrak/Metra station where you can see eastbounds approaching from about three miles away (takes an average of four to five minutes to cover that distance) and westbounds coming around famous Naperville curve (uphill and about a half mile away to the east).

I guess I should have read the rest of the threads before I posetd mine. Marion Oh would be good as well as Fostria Oh I have been to both of those places as well. Fostoria is not as easily to see trains with it being the part of town it is in a web cam would be better. The more web cam the better around the cuntry for thoughs of us who can't travel much to go to all the places to watch trains.Maybe the could be of some good to the railroads as well.

I would like to see one on the NS CNOTP at SJ Tower/North Wye area north of Danville, Kentucky; where the NS Louisville Mainline merges into the CNOTP at both SJ Tower and North Wye. You may see up to 50 trains a day run thru that area.

I've seen responses about the Kansas City area, but a hot spot to put a Rail-Cam in the area is Santa Fe JCT. It sits just outside the Argentine yards, and is adjacent to the UP yard. Other roads you can see there are KCS, CSX, NS, Amtrak, Montana Raillink, CN (run through power I think), and other roads that come through as run-through stuff. Right now is NOT a good time to visit the Junction since it is undergoing construction on a new highline, and BNSF has posted new NO TRESPASSING signs. But, there are other great spots to railfan in the KC area.[8D]

Here's an idea:

How about putting a camera high on a signal mast on the home signal bridge of a busy and complicated interlocking (the throat of a passenger terminal, perhaps, or a busy freight junction). You wouldn't be able to see the sides of too much, but to see trains thread their way through a complex maze of track might be interesting and educational.

My nomination for such a site would be the eastward home signal at Park (Elmhurst, Illinois). The camera would face east, and you'd have three tracks going beneath you, spreading into six at the other end, with plenty of crossovers...plenty of action, too, with well over 100 trains on a weekday.

But would the UP cooperate? Naahh....

How about LaGrange, IL? BNSF's triple-track mainline from Chicago to Aurora crosses over the triple-track mainline of the Indiana Harbor Belt. These are 2 of the busiest lines in the Chicago area. You'll get the full view of railroading in Chicago - commuter trains, Amtrack, and of course, LOTS of freights!!

Someone else has already suggested the Amtrak station in Vancouver, Wash., so I'll put my two cents in for another Portland-area location.

The interlocking at East Portland Junction, on the east end of the Steel Bridge, gets trains from four directions and includes Amtrak, UP and some BNSF moves.

Cameras mounted on the Riverwalk pedestrian overpass, pointed down these axes, could capture a wide array of traffic, including, perhaps, MAX light rail trains on the upper level of the Steel Bridge.

Got a perfect place for a cam right here in the Pacific Northwest. Across the Columbia River from Portland, Oregon is Vancouver, Washington. The Amtrak station is located on the north side of the river, with a swing bridge for river traffic. The station sits between tracks coming from three directions: from Seattle, from Portland, and from the Columbia River Gorge. The cam could sit on the roof of the Amtrak station and point in the direction of the river and the bride, or to the north which would also allow a view of the BNSF yard. Many freight trains here daily, switching activities, and 10 Amtrak trains per day.

How about Whitefish, Mont. yard where BNSF already has four cameras on the tall radio tower at the yard office? One camera is pointed West looking at Eastbund trains entering the yard.

My vote would be for one along the BNSF main line in/out of Chicago, more specifically in the Eola yards, perhaps at McClurg Street where the main enters the west end of the yard...lots of traffic, freight and passenger, Metra, Amtrak, switching moves, etc. all of the time. Probably about the same volume, or perhaps even more than Rochelle.

At Union Station, KC, MO and at the Argentine Yards on the Kansas side of the river (see cover story July? issue of Trains Mag.) There's a pedetrian/car bridge there for great viewing of continuous flow of trains in out of the yard and it also overlooks some shops. The time between trains at either location is 10-20min. More trains pass these locations more than any of the other railcams on the internet combined.

For those who love commuter trains and Amtrak I'd suggest the Sunnyside Yards in Long Island City, N.Y.
There are countless Long Island RR cars, Amtrak, and New Jersey Transit trains moving around all day long. There are lots of MOW equipment and an old switcher here or there moving around, almost all day long.
There are freight trains also run by the New York and Atlantic.

Joe,
you need to putt a rail cam in Peru,IN. The busy Norfolk Southern Detroit Kansas City main goes right through there. the line sees allmost up
to 40 trains aday. There is a 3 track yard there where they keep locals. And you can see Foreign
power on the main on just about every train. from IC,UP,SP,MRL,KCS,CP,CN,BN,BNSF,HLCX,MPI,FURX,CSX,
RMGX and more. There is a big lot where the old N&W yard use to be wich would be a good place for a cam,and there is tons of light poles around the yard where you could place the cam. Every west bound train has to stop for a crew change at peru,IN every day, and a couple east bounds. wich makes that even better so you could view the train for a couple miniuets.
I would love to see a rail cam there. Tell me

Galesburg, Illinois either in the yard or on a post at the city park where railfans can drive in the grass off of Lincoln street. There the ex Santa Fe main passes underneath two busy ex BN mains (75 to 100 trains maybe in 24 hours).
Sidney, Illinois in the empty farm service grass lot on the east side of the small village. The UP Chicago, Fort Worth, St. Louis main line goes under the busy Fort Wayne, Decatur, St. Louis, Kansas City NS line. Plus there is a semi recent conection put in between the two mains here.
Tolono would be a good spot.

Houston is my choice:

Belt Junction on the north end, tons of UP and BNSF action. busy and slow moving at that usually.

North end of Lloyd Yard in Spring, Tx at Spring Junction. switching and run thrus both. example: http://www.railroad.net/forums/photo/msg0511035321936.jpg

Rosenberg, Tx at Tower 17. BNSF crosses UP main just east of Houston. Busy, busy.

No question - King Street Station, Seattle.

50+ trains per day including BNSF freight, Sounder transit, Amtrak Cascades talgo, Coast Starlight, Empire Builder, and coachyard switching.

Point it south and you'll also "railfan" Safeco Field's roof opening and closing, using locomotive traction motors, flanged wheels, and rails.

Somewhere on the TGV-Nord line in France, between Gonesse and Lille. There are high-speed passenger trains every few minutes, and a variety of types, but you'd need a fast simulated shutter speed.

Somewhere on the NEC would be nice too, or on one of the busier Metra/Amtrak lines around Chicago.

Either Toronto, Ontario Canada or Calgary, Alberta in Canada to get max coverage of CP/CN/VIA. It seems there is so little coverage of the Canadian roads, this would be great.

How about LA Union Station? The cams are already up, just need to convince Metrolink to put them up on the web. Currently it's a closed circuit system for dispatcher use.

Somewhere in the vicinity of Relay, MD (Thomas Viaduct) on CSX's former B&O Old Main Line and Capitol subs. The ideal place would be overlooking the viaduct, but the view from the South, with the Sun, really has no place to put a camera, the Harbor Tunnel Thruway cuts across the railroad just past the viaduct. There are several houses close to the tracks in the S-curves leading to the split at the viaduct from St. Denis that might be candidates if one could pursuade a homeowner that it wouldn't be any trouble.

For pure fantasy, it would be great to have a camera along one of the few remaining steam lines in Northern China before all the mainline steam is gone.

How about CP LaGrange in Illinois, that Accomidates the BN and IHB (Indiana Harbor Belt) BN, CN, Conrail (now CSX/ NS) CP, UP, WC, Metra and Amtrak would all be seen. There are poles all over the area there to out up a camera.

It only updates about once every 15 minutes, and it shuts down for the night at about 6pm Switzerland time, which is early in the day this side of the pond. Still, it's a start...

How many cameras do you have? I can think of a bunch of good spots in addition to those already named:
Horseshoe Curve or the pedestrian bridge over NS in downtown Altoona, PA
Grand Crossing (BNSF, CP and occasional UP) in La Crosse, WI (BNSF already has a security camera pointed at it. Is it possible to tap in to it?)
Duplainville Crossing (CP & WC)near Waukesha, WI--in Kalmbach's back yard--would they sponsor?
State Line Tower at southeast corner of Chicago
UP swing bridge in Clinton, IA
Huey Long bridge in New Orleans
Bellvue, OH
A lot of these would be technically difficult and some would have security problems but I've been lucky enough to do some train watching at each and you really couldn't go wrong with any of them from that point of view.

Other considerations for camera locations are the availability of high-speed Internet access to the camera's computer, a safe place for the computer, and a good ISP to maintain the system's site and technology.

Bandwidth is the most important and expensive factor. Bandwidth determines how fast you can stream and how many folks can watch the image at any time.

Rob has a good suggestion for 30th Street Station in Philadelphia. I"d also thing someplace else along the NEC - Amtrak, NJTransith and Path trains would be east of Newark's Penn Station.

My choice for a Railcam: Penn Coach Yard at 30th St. Station, Philadelphia. Mount the camera somewhere on the auto parking deck that directly overlooks the yard North of the station. Watch the great fleet of trains on the Northeast Corridor as they enter and exit this magnificent station. Also trains headed West to Pittsburgh and Chicago. Locomotive service facilities can be seen. Often unique and/or historic trainsets visit the yard.
