UP retires 8500 series SD90MAC-II's
Posted by bnsfkline on Wednesday, January 25, 2006 11:53 AM
HA HA! ANTHER "Suspension" THREAD!

MWHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!

Ok, heres the deal. I have stopped taking pictures and video of UP power.....its so common, and I am pretty upset at them.

They retired most of my Favorite locomotive model, the SD90MACII.

They may have been failures....but I still liked them, as they were unique, they were the DDA40X's of their time......but unlike the DD's, they are going into a lease fleet.

P.S. I finally got 20 hours worth of video!

I doubt the UP "retired the SD90-mac. I think they just ran out of expensive parts.

LEASE FLEET????? Already??? Are you kidding me? I have to agree with Randy. Costs are up to the point they need to raise rates. So they will run the snot out of cheaper power and let these big things sit.
If they do hit the lease market Maybe we will get a few . HEHEHE something cool a SD90mac in FURX lettering that would be grand.

Yes we are on time but this is yesterdays train

I remember saying the same thing when UP was a SD40-2 railroad. Now I wish I had taken more pictures of them.

CIT Financial (CEFX) has SD90MAC's numbered in the 100 series. They were bought new and currently spend most of their time on CP.

The UP SD90s which are being refered to are, or were, from the 8500 series. These SD90s from the 8500 series contained the 6,000 horsepower prime mover. They are refered to by UP as an SD90MAC-H. Locos 8522-8561 have the phase 2 noses which are SD90MAC-H IIs. The SD90s with the 6,000 horsepower did not work out very well for the UP so the company has eliminated some of them and has renumbered, or will be renumbering in the future, the rest of them to the 8900 series to make room for more SD70ACes in the 8500 series. I have learned that the half which UP has eliminated are the ones with the phase 2 noses which sucks.
As for the rest of the UP SD90s, numbers 8000-8308, they all remain SD90/43MACs with the 4,300 horsepower engine on the UP roster.

Maybe BNSF will borrow some of these SD90MAC's for the lease fleet so I can stop seeing the constant Parade of Crash 9's.

I have seen the C30-7's in the lease fleet (HLCX with the crossed-out "Union Pacific") on the side every now and then.

bnsfkline,

Found this in another publication today: "In late 2005 Union Pacific
let the lease expire on 6000-h.p. SD90MAC-H's Nos. 8522-8561.
They have been assigned to the EMD lease fleet( EMLX,same nos.)"

Article goes on to say that some were assigned to the KCS,after shopping
at E.St.Louis for minor repairs.

I do wonder what CP is doing with their little batch of SD90MACH-IIs? I remember CP were the first ones to order the SD90MACH-II, the UP came along.

The 8100 series are SD9043MAC's. UP has 309 of them, 8000-8308.
The SD90MACH-1's, 8500-8521 are being renumbered to 8910-8931
Heres a picture of the now lease units on KCS

KCS has taken all 40 of the former UP SD90MAC-Hs for a long term lease. They are going to retire some older locomotives. CP has 4 SD90MAC-Hs. With the seasonal slow down on the CP system, CP is storing 44 locomotives until business picks up, 40 are older SD40-2s. I'll give you one guess what the other 4 locomotives are. Hey KCS I know where you can get 4 more low-mileage gently used locomotives for a good price.[:)][:)][:)][:)][(-D]

Think those SD90MAC's will be repainted into KCS colors since that railroad plans to use them for a long while, just as they did with repainting SD45-2Ts and other acquired second-hand units?

the UP runs small transfer freights in and out of peoria, all the power thats ever in here is either UP or ex-CNW SD40-2s or C40-8s. the only modern UP equipment through here is on coaltrains.

Isn't it interesting the SD90MAC-H are being returned to the Lessor but the AC6000 are still active. Now who builds the better engine.
