Is there any history to the Copper Mile, what made it so special that everyone wanted to put their penny on that stretch of track?

[:0]Geeze, I wonder how many pennies have come into contact with that stretch of rail to be named "Copper Mile". [:0]

Yeah, I agree with the other poster, anyone have a pic? Sure would like to see what all this is about.

Looked it up on google, and nothing seemed to come up, confirming my earlier suspicion.

At the NJT Port Morris yard they need some new trackage. Some of that trackage was built in the 1950-1960's for PRR and EL. Also on the MoW trackage at the yard there are tons of flat spots on the rails. No wonder why they dont use those tracks a lot.

Iv been watching a lot of monty python, ten coming on the forums, and some of the time I can't tell the difference. Together we could make an excellent Railfan sketch comedy show........with Soo's News report about the golden mile and paint scraping as the first skit of episode 1...............

True story - while doing some switching we had some kids run out and put some coins on the rail. Since we were moving very very slow, I just stopped the engine, got off and put the money in my pocket. I did smile and wave at the kids who were standing in the bushes with their mouths hanging open. If I remember, I got about 23 cents out of it.

that must have angered thoase kids

now ive said this before in previous threads, but in 2002, I was helping with a commuter excursion for the museum, and when the train was almost to where i was, this guyu handed his son some coins and told him to go up to the track and put them on. i stopped the boy and told then that it wasn't right to do. im pretty sure the little boy who was probably 6 or 7 woulda gotten hit if he had put them on the track, because the train was coming so fast so close.

While the kids are waiting beside the tracks for their cions to get smashed / flung you should squirt them with one of those high-powered water guns. That will teach them to put stuff on the tracks
