BNSF orders 40 GP38-2's from NRE
Posted by joegreen on Wednesday, December 28, 2005 9:51 PM
BNSF has a contract with NRE to rebuild 40 GP38-2's in NRE's shops in Dixmoore, IL and Mt. Vernon, IL.

The following GP35's,GP38's, and GP40's sit in Silvis(at least what I could see by photos on the net). The engines marked with a star will be on the list to be rebuilt first. Since there will be a total of 40 engines being rebuilt the other engines(no star) on this list below could also be added to the rebuild list later on.
BNSF 2621 GP35
*CNW 829 GP35

DOWN with planned obsolescence and UP (not to be confused with U.P.) with recycling and rebuilding!

These aren't the right types of engines- the 600 series are ex-CNW GP40s and the 1980-1981 were plain jane GP38s.

I wasn't going to go through the trouble of stating the 600's were ex-CNW's or saying 1980 and 1981 were GP38's, all I wanted to do is state what was down in Silvis and what model the engine looked like it was.

reminds me of BN's rebuild program in the late 80s and early 90s of having GP30/35s rebuilt into GP39E/M/Vs. BN even had old Southern and N&W high hood GP30s rebuilt with kitbashed GP35-style cabs.

I'm glad that there will be some "old" power getting a new lease on life.

I wonder if they will ever do anything else with their gp30's, as long as they don't change around the cab. (I'm guessing that BN2762 was at one time a gp30? It just doesn't look the same w/o that rounded gp30 cab, especially the roofline, down for the cab, up in the middle, and down again at the back for the fans.)

Say goodbye to anything with a 567 power assembly on BNSF.[?]

How did BNSF get all this U.P. power?

It was UP power but its all NRE power now. Same with the ex-CSX units. They were UP, DRGW, CSX, etc and were sold to NRE. Now NRE is rebuilding them and leasing them to BNSF.

their may be a 567 powered engine left #`1460 the BEEP at the shops in aargentine KS in a baldwin switcher with a complete GP-7 hood on it. Lets just say it is a face only a mother or a railfan could love!'

BNSF is finnally gitting it. The railroad dosn't need all thease green goat locos in yards, what they really kneed is a fleet of microprocesser GP series

Yes, the engines were bought by NRE from other railroads(UP and CSX) and shipped to Silvis until someone buys them(BNSF)................oh and by the way............they won't be leased to BNSF, they are being bought by BNSF. So after NRE rebuilds them they will pobably won't see them for another 20 years........at least.

We had a CP Rail, high nosed SD40-2 in here today, on a BNSF grain train.
It is a NREX locomotive now, but still in CP paint...odd looking to see that high hood up front.
Unit 5480.

It is a "B-unit".All engines in NRE's lease fleet are not lead quilified, that's why they have the "B-UNIT DO NOT OCCUPY" decals on the doors.

Here's an update......................

2000-2039 are the assigned numbers to these 40 units.

So far that I know of NRE's Dixmoor, IL shop has 6 units scheduled for rebuild....
UP 648 to BNSF 2000
CSX 9703 to BNSF 2001
CSX 9731 to BNSF 2002
UP 9962 to BNSF 2003
CSX 2045 to BNSF 2020
CSX 2064 to BNSF 2021

I believe NRE has rounded them up and are gutting them now, so it'll be a few months before they're released. I believe NRE's Silvis, IL and Mt. Vernon, IL shops have some units scheduled for rebuild but the info hasn't been released yet.

Those just don't quite look right! Neat nonetheless, but it makes me wonder what Paducah would have... oh wait, they did make the GP39Vs! (V for "VMV", the current(?) entity at Paducah shops)

If you look at the list there is not one former SP unit in the group. I guess the power desk people remember what kind of shape the SP was in around the proposed SPSF merger and do not want any of their old power on the railroad.
