Investigators from Canadian National Railway are now trying to determine what caused the derailment of an eastbound train Tuesday morning just east of the Highway 658 crossing in Redditt, about 25 kilometres north of Kenora.
Senior manager of of public affairs for CN Rail Jim Feeny said the cause is still under investigation by CN, who will report their findings to both Transport Canada and the Transportation Safety Board.
Feeny would not speculate on the cause of the derailment, which occurred while the train was passing through the Redditt highway crossing and travelling only 10 miles per hour. However, when questioned, he admitted the derailment was unusual, but not unheard of.
#8220;A vast majority of trains proceed without incident, but incidents do occur,#8221; said Feeny from his Edmonton office on Tuesday afternoon.
Only the two locomotives and the first two cars of the 80-car train, that originated in Winnipeg, derailed just east of the Redditt crossing at about 6 a.m. on Tuesday. Both the locomotives and the two cars, carrying a load of railcar wheels, remained upright, but left the tracks.

and also involving VIA on CN track:
#8216;Freak occurrence#8217; derails second train at Redditt

The Canadian National Railway line through Redditt was reopened for good early Wednesday morning after a second derailment involving a Via Rail passenger train occurred near the highway crossing on Tuesday evening.
CN Rail spokesman Jim Feeny said the Via Rail derailment near the Highway 658 crossing, the second there in just over 12 hours, occurred just before 7 p.m. Tuesday. The Via Rail train was the first to pass through the area since a CN cargo train left the tracks at around 6 a.m. the same day.
#8220;It was a frustrating afternoon and evening for our people,#8221; said Feeny.
Like the CN cargo train, the two Via locomotives left the track at a slow speed of 10 miles per hour and remained upright. Feeny said there were no injuries to the passengers or crew as the remainder of the train stayed on the track and Via transported the passengers back to Winnipeg by bus.
