Tragic Accident--2 year old killed by train
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, November 22, 2005 8:49 AM
A newspaper article has carried the saddening news that a 2 year old was struck and killed by an Amtrak train while being watched by a babysitter. Police say charges may be filed in the death.

Tragic accident. I used to live right there on Monterey at Blossom Hill. It's 40/60 mph double track with UP,Amtrak and Caltrans all moving along at a good clip. I think charges should be filed on the original babysitter too. You don't just pawn off the job onto someone that the mother doesn't know. And why didn't the mother know? You would think she would keep closer tabs on her children.

Sounds like prayers are in order for the toddler's family and for the Amtrak engine crew.

NS engines are quite common out here on the transcon. I see a half dozen or so each time I go up to Cajon.

And CSX units are common on UP trains

My thoughts and prayers to the families involved in this incident.

I do wonder if thebabysitter was leading the kids across the tracks at an inactive grade crossing, or was she tresspassing on the right of way by allowing the kids to cross the tracks? Either way I think the babysitter should of know better than to let the kids do something like that, even then she wasn't being too responseable in looking out for a train. Also, if I were the mother of the 2 year old, I would think about pressing charges against the normal babysitter, and the subsititute babysitter. In no way do you let someone else watch the kids that you are being hired or trusted to watch, that's ludacris.

Cajon Pass?

Wave to BNSF trains, a friend is working on that route as an engineer, usually runs dash-9s over Cajon Pass (From LA to Barstow, and ocasionally from LA to San Diego). He moved to America in 90's.

The area in question has a wall on the west side of the tracks and Monterey highway on the east side of the tracks. It's not a pedestrian friendly area. There is no sidewalk in between the tracks and the highway, And there is only a broken sidewalk on the other side of the highway. The only breaks in the wall are where major e-w roads like Blossom Hill intersect with the highway. And the highway through there is 50 or 55 with crossings far apart, dangerous in it's own right.

I agree with Sarah, The original babysitter should be held accountable.

My uncle also runs through there on the UP at times (depending on what pool he's in at the time), but I haven't seen him while railfanning yet. Either way I wave at all the crews.[8D]

Great

I love that scenery, reminds me of some parts of Croatia, like these, only scenery in mountains around Mojave is much cooler to me :
