UP829, yes the Twins were around in 1959, only they were called the Washington Senators. The franchise is just as old as the White Sox, and was an original in the American League, founded in 1901. The team came to Minnesota in 1961, when both leagues expanded by two teams each. The AL added a new Senators team, and the Angels. The NL added the Houston, but I don't think they were called the Astros until a few years later. The other team was the Mets.

The second Senator team moved to Texas in the early 70's, and became the Rangers.

Having been to old Comisky, and also new Comisky, I have to say there was something special about the old one, it wreaked of history. By comparison the new one seemed sterile, much like the Metrodome.

The Athletics were the last of the original 8, starting in Philadelphia, then moving to Oakland with a brief stop in KC. The Orioles actually started as the St Louis Browns.

The interesting thing about the original 16 teams, 8 NL and 8 AL, is that up until the Dodgers and Giants moved west in the late 50's all the teams traveled by train, and all were east of the Mississippi, except St Louis which was just across the river.

On the pregame, one of the '59 Sox said there were 8 teams in the AL. I can only remember 7 - Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland, Boston, New York, Baltimore, and the Washington Senators. Who'd I miss. For the NL I remember Frisco, LA, St Louis, Milwaukee, Chicago, Cincinatti, Pittsburg, and Phillidelphia.

Were the Twins around in '59? Can't say I'm disappointed to hear that the Circus Tent might get torn down. Hopefully Rowand won't kill himself in center field in Houston. What's with that anyway. Is MLB trying to emulate NASCAR? Are sandtraps in the outfield next?

IMO the Cell is a really great park, especially since they redid the upper deck. The mainline RR tracks in Chicago are all elevated so trains don't sound their horns too often during a game. It's fun to think about how many AL teams used to come to Chicago on the NYC, maybe even the 20th Century Ltd.

Memory cells getting jogged.

I was in the second year taking courses at Illinois Institute of Technology, when was it, Fall of 1959 or 60, when the Sox won the pennant. Sharing an apartment with 4 or 5 school buddies just a block from Comiski Park. Bill Veck had gotten the fireworks thing going and the victory display was quite long.

The school had then and still has buildings right up against the east side of the Rock Island (now METRA) ROW and the traffic was the Rock suburban and long distance trains as well as the New York Central trains. The drafting lab was on the third or fourth floor of the Old Main which was great for checking out the afternoon parade. Had a morning English Class in one of the "temporary" WWII buildings in a room at ground floor level backed up to the tracks. Thought the English instructor might go jump in front of a train after he had been interupted by the noise about the 99th time.

This thing is getting scary. I've been a White Sox fan since my conception, you know it's passed on from father to son. The last time they were in the World Series I was eight years old. I remember listening to them win the penant on the radio with my father. I was jumping around and he was actually giving thanks to God.

I grew up in a small town. When I came to Chicago after my Army discharge it was a revalation that I could actually go see a major league game.

If they win this thing I'm going to take the newspaper, put it in covering, and lay it on my father's grave. I don't know what else to do. I never dreamed this was a possibility.

The Twins actually went to court with the Metropolitan Sports Commission this past week. The issue is that they have been playing at the dome without a lease for a number of years now, and want to force the stadium thing to come to a head. The governor is no help, and the legislature is worse. Personally, I don't want or need a new stadium unless it has a retractable roof. Been a season ticket holder since 1988. New stadium just means higher ticket prices.

A great 24 hours in Chicago...Bears over the Ravens 10-6 to go to 3-3 and tied for 1st in a weak division.

Hmmm...Astro's up 4-2 in the 6th. Looks like there is still quite a bit of baseball left in this series.

Speaking of railfanning from the stands, my high school football bleachers were hard against the Erie main line. The Lakeview Ave crossing was about 200 yards west, so you can imagine the sound of four Alco Fs roaring with horns blaring and 100 or so cars rattling over the jointed rail. It drowned out the quarterback, the fans, the band and everything else. It was especially cool on the radio, when even the broadcasters were overwhelmed by the noise. And they did not go to commercial. You heard it all, often several times per game. It was great! The tracks are still there. The trains are mostly NW coal drags, but the stadium has long since been moved to a quieter venue.

The Twins play indoors, the only trains to watch outside the dome are the light rail. The St Paul Saints on the other hand play at Midway Stadium which is sandwiched between the former GN and NP mains. There the trains are considered a part of the game. It's easy to see a half a dozen go by in nine innings.

Can't say I'm rooting for either team in the series. I kinda like Houston, as they are first timers to the fall classic. On the other hand, A. J. Pierzynski is a former Twin, but the White Sox are a divisional rival. See the dilema?

Bob Elson got his start in radio by interviewing disembarking celebrities from the 20th Century Limited. The NYC line ran by Commiskey Park. Later when he became announcer for the Sox games, the 20th Century Limited would toot its horn as it passed and, if the Sox were playing, Elson would say, "There goes the 20th Century Limited".

Mariner's Stadium in Seattle has a roof that rolls over the BNSF mainline just south of King Strret Station and the new Seahawks Statium.
