Jay, 1959 was the last time they were in it. Didn't win of course.

UP829, yes the Twins were around in 1959, only they were called the Washington Senators. The franchise is just as old as the White Sox, and was an original in the American League, founded in 1901. The team came to Minnesota in 1961, when both leagues expanded by two teams each. The AL added a new Senators team, and the Angels. The NL added the Houston, but I don't think they were called the Astros until a few years later. The other team was the Mets.

The second Senator team moved to Texas in the early 70's, and became the Rangers.

Having been to old Comisky, and also new Comisky, I have to say there was something special about the old one, it wreaked of history. By comparison the new one seemed sterile, much like the Metrodome.

The Athletics were the last of the original 8, starting in Philadelphia, then moving to Oakland with a brief stop in KC. The Orioles actually started as the St Louis Browns.

The interesting thing about the original 16 teams, 8 NL and 8 AL, is that up until the Dodgers and Giants moved west in the late 50's all the teams traveled by train, and all were east of the Mississippi, except St Louis which was just across the river.

If you bring good Binoculars with you, Dodger stadium's upper level nose-blead seats on the 3rd base side offer a good wide angle view of LAs Union Station and riverfront trackage area.

If you look at the history of the last 2 years it has been teams who have not one a world series in 80+ years. Next year look for the Cubs to win in a rematch of the cross town series that would be fun one half of the city celebrating and one half crying in their beer. Houstan does stand a chance the Sox bullpen got the entire ALCS off so they are rested up.

The bigger shock yesterday was that the Vikings beat the Packers, came from behind to tie, and win with a last second field goal. They arent talking about the "love boat" scandal anymore.

The Wild had a bit of a letdown witth the Blackhawks after a great game the night before with the Blues.

Not to minimize the Sox win last night, as the finish was almost as great as 1986 game 1 with Kirk Gibson's homerun, but once again a questionable call by the umpire opened the door for Chicago, and they cashed in.

On the pregame, one of the '59 Sox said there were 8 teams in the AL. I can only remember 7 - Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland, Boston, New York, Baltimore, and the Washington Senators. Who'd I miss. For the NL I remember Frisco, LA, St Louis, Milwaukee, Chicago, Cincinatti, Pittsburg, and Phillidelphia.

Drove up the Dan Ryan after dark last week. It was neat to see the Loop skyskraper with all its windows dark except for the ones spelling GO SOX.

Many many Sox games have been real nail-biters all year long. It's almost like watching the movie Major League 99. I think they've become conditioned to games like this.

Joe West's umpire crew has been really unkind to the Sox this year and I think there's been some bad blood between Ozzi and West, so I was surprised to get a break for a change. This one wasn't quite like the AJ calls though. Had the ball not hit the bat it would have been ball 4, Had it been called a foul, the next pitch might have been ball 4 or Dye might have hit it out onto the Dan Ryan.

Thanks for getting me straight on the last date the Sox got the pennant.

Over the course of many years, my allegiance to ML baseball teams has shifted from time to time. Having been raised north of Chicago in the days when the Braves were still in Boston, the Cubs were the early favorite. My son has an allegiance to them, but doesn't expect them to win anytime in his life, even if he lives another 70 years and makes the century mark.

It would be nice to see the Sox win, we'll give it to Houston next year.

As for the NFC Central? It is a wonder that any of those teams win a game, even when they are playing each other.

Well I don't remember the 1959 world series because my father was only about 7 at the time and I wasn't even thought of for many years to come. I do remember spending alot of time at my Grandparents house at 35th and Lowe (a short walk to Comiskey Park). On many occasions we would watch the game with my grandpa and when the Sox would hit a homer we would run down to the corner and watch the fireworks. Both my grandparents are now deceased but my aunt still lives in that house......... those memories are priceless. Now I have twin girls that will be 2 months old soon and they will be wearing their White Sox outfits for many days to come. Nothing like holding one of them (or both) while watching a game, Isn't Life Great!

No problem Jay, I actually looked it up last week, because unlike the Red Sox, I couldn't remember seeing them in the fall classic. I remember seeing the Red Sox collapse a couple of times.

There was a reason I couldn't remember the White Sox being in it. I wasn't born yet. The Twins (and the Vikings ) and I are all products of 1961. The Twins debut preceeded mine by about six weeks.

As for the Vikings, I used to be much more of a fan. It was their Red Sox like behavior in the 1999 NFC championship game against Atlanta that finally tore my heart out. With time remaining to move the ball and kick a field goal to win, the Vikes decided to take a knee, run out the clock, and go to overtime. I can't remember if the Vikings had the ball, but Atlanta kicked the game winner at the first opportunity. I was crushed, and swore NEVER AGAIN!!!!

The NFC north AKA the black and blue division, should be renamed the black eye division. Prior to the game Sunday, in my usual cynical tone, I said to Big Girl, " I hope this game ends in a zero, zero overtime tie." And, for a whole quarter it looked like I was going to get my wish, as Green Bay missed a field goal, and the Vikings weren't even close. In the second Green Bay pulled it together, and rolled up 17 points. I was content, thinking that should just about do it.

In the middle of the third quarter, much to my dismay, the Vikings put good plays together on consecutive downs. They scored a rare touchdown. This couldn't be happening. But it was, and just to prove it, they scored another. There was still plenty of time to dump it. Green Bay kicked a field goal, but the Vikings answered with two of their own. Doing the math it's tied at 20. Something is seriously wrong, because the Vikings have the ball in long field goal range.

The kick is up, and with zero seconds on the clock. it clears the crossbar. This was the most entertaining game of the Mike Tice era, in spite of the fact that they won.

The Mike Tice firing pool is still open, but if you had your money on a date in October, those bets are dead.

Big_Boy and I were there Oct. 12 when the Wild stomped the Canucks 6-0.

This was my first time at a game with Bertuzzi in it since the "INCIDENT". Nothing warms the heart like being in perfect sync with 18,000 plus other people. Whether is was Bertuzzi's "BOO", or the many opportunities available to holler "SIEVE!!!!!"



Big_Boy and his son have tickets for the New Years game as well. I expect both of them to be as hoarse as I was the 12th.

No Dale, that wasn't what pissed the fans off. It was during the playoffs, just before game 2, and he came in through the lobby where people were lined up to buy tickets for game 6. His remark was something to the effect, "Don't bother, there isn't going to be a game 6". He really threw down the gauntlet with that one, and we all know what happened after that, the Wild pulled it out in 7. [#oops]

So during warm ups before game 6, the glass was lined with signs, ragging on Bertuzzi. People were standing shoulder to shoulder covering most of the glass with taunts.It was one of those moments in sports that you live for.

This was our offering, which actually got flashed on the scoreboard for a second or two during the game.

7-5 in 14 innings...... game was over 5.5 hours long.

I shut it off and attempted to get some sleep but my twin girls got mom and I up for a midnight feeding and we caught the top of the 14th just in time.

These Sox aren't jinxed like those Sox were. It sounds like I fell asleep an inning too soon. Is that the "fat lady" I hear warming up?

This isn't exactly what I wanted to see, but I think this one is pretty well decided. It certainly has been dramatic and entertaining. This is going to make next season more interesting having the world champs in the division with the Twins.

Dale, the Canucks just outplayed the Wild last night. It didn't help that the Wild were missing a number of key players.
