CSX PHOTOS OF HEAD ON COLLISION IN FRANKLIN VA.

CSX had a major accident on the line from Fraklin Va. to the North Carolina border. These pictures where taken two days after accident and everything has been pushed to the side. Luckily the engineer, cond. and trainee were not seruiosly hurt on either train. This was a head-on at about track speed of 40mph. You can see the track was straight and this happen at about 3am.

I take it that both crews jumped, joined the birds, as the old boomer stories used to say. I don't see any other way they would have survived.

All survived, and doing well. Both trains had a engineer, conductor and a traine aboard. They released five from hospital all ready and one still remans hopitalized, with minor but survivable injuries. At present they believe neither train was going at track speed(40mph). About a mile north is a 2000 foot siding, which they believe the south bound should have hold up in. NTSB is still investigating, and they have the black boxes. I believe a lot of damage acuried with the movement of the equipment being muscled off the right of way. This is a short line and dispatched controled, non-CTC running.

one correction...
the pic of what is left of the sd-40 cab where you said "note throttle" the throttle is not in the frame...and would be to the right...what you see all broken off are the air brake controlls...the bottom one is the locomoitve brakes (independant) and the one on the top is the automatic (train brake)...
just thought i would pass that on

Too bad about the SD 40's havent heard about a ead on collision in quite awhile, ow well, accidents happen

Guess that's one SD40-2 that has gone to that great railroad in the sky. Doesn't look like much could be salvaged.
