Help in identifying this locomotive...
Posted by emd_SD_60 on Saturday, September 24, 2005 5:32 PM
I just caught a train a few minutes ago, and the fourth unit was a rather rare locomotive on the IC... it was an all-red (no other markings) GP40 or SD40, had no dynamic brakes, and had lettering on the cab in white letters. And before anyone asks, NO it was not a SOO or CP loco. I was tempted to get in my car and go after it, but mama wouldn't let me... Any explanations?

BTW the red was not a bright red, like candyapple. It was more of a dark shade, almost near burgundy.

I guess if I had to narrow it down, it was more than likely a leaser. Leasers are not as flamboyant when it comes to paint schemes...[:D]

Sounds like a HLCX SD40 to me.

You wouldn't happen to know what number group they're in? I know the 6000 series are the maroon/dark blue scheme, and the 9000 series are the former MPI's in the navy/gold scheme...

Only a guess, and not even an educated one, but I'll go with Helm Leasing, or possibly Locomotive Leasing Partners.

I've seen something on the UP that sounds similar to that... behind this locomotive http://uptrain.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=144865

That looks just about like the locomotive, only the cab lettering was white and it had no dynamics...perhaps a former MoPac maybe? Although I know CP had a few SD40-2's w/o dynamics, hand-me-downs from SOO, so I guess i'll go with the latter.[8D]

Chris - checked my list and we have seen two fire engine red locomotives - from NREX - # 5637 and # 5693. My book sez they are SD50's. They are really bright. Maybe this is what you saw?

The unit I showed was ex-MP, but either the leaser or CP put dynamics on it.

Chris...
Did you mystery locomotive have a reflective red and white zebra stripe on the side sill?

I have a photo of a Helms HLCX GP38-2, fresh paint, just showed up on the UP down here, still has that new locomotive smell...red on red with the sill stripe.
Email me for the photo...
