Why do you like the "toasters"?

I like EMD better than any of those toasters.

Amen to that!

I like the chugging sound that the older U-boats made at speed. The newer GE locos sound a bit like a cement mixer, although I like the sound of the air compressor (at least I think that's what it is) that kicks in and out from time to time mingling its' sound with that of the prime mover.

Who would have though, eh? Locomotives with pyrotechnics. [(-D] I would love to see that in person.[}:)]

I see more GE units than EMD. Besides, what's so bad about the GEs? And, what's so bad about the EMDs? They are all great, I don't really think there's a "better" kind of engine, they all have their pros and cons.

EMDs don't nessicarily look like "crap" but I know what you mean. The GEs may look better but the EMDs don't look so bad either. And, have any of the GE freights, like the Dash 9s, had any major problems?

EMDs have had a much better resale value. How many shortlines and regionals do you know of that run GEs? While the older EMDs looked better than their GE counterparts, the newer EMDs seem to have lost a bit of the style that EMD used to have. GEs really don't look "bad", but on the other hand, all modern mainline locomotives look alike!

Railroads also like the fact that GE stands behind their products. Also what killed EMD was the 50 series after 3-5 years you had to replace all of teh traction motor wiring. Also the 50 series motor the 645 leaked like a sieve a engieneer had teh bright IDEA TO USE A COPPER TUBE FOR A OIL RETURN. Copper is a brittle metal and it kept breaking. Yes EMD does have a longer life and eaiser part supply but I think the best would be a combo of EMD engine and GE electrical systems.

Incidentally, that's what EMD (EMC at the time) started out with!

AMEN to that!! I do like EMD better than GE though but, seeing flames shoot out the exhaust stack is pretty good looking. Than again it's not that good for the envirnment, and this indications means that there is something wrong with the engine but, IT sure is nice to see. [:D]

I also like the sound of the compressor working together with the engine at idle.
