No A/C on CN Dash 9's?
Posted by THayman on Tuesday, September 13, 2005 10:45 AM
Is there no Air Conditioning on CN Dash 9's? They don't have the normal side mounted conditioner behind the conductor's side of the cab. Is there a reason for this?

I know they have A/C because I've been on a bunch of their units. I believe that they are located behind the cab on the cornductor's side or maybe under the engineer's side I don't remember, but they do have them.

AC was made standard on the Dash-9 it could be mounted undere the cab also. AC
was deemed nesacary to keep the computers cool.

C &NW's CW44-9s did not have A/C when delivered, but I've seen some former North Western Dash Nines reequipped with air conditioners on the UP.

I've noticed that some engineers prefer to use foreign units as lead power such as UP and BNSF locomotives just because of the air conditioning. The great thing about being able to use the pool power is that it is a comfortable option during peak summer periods-I just feel sorry for the poor BNSF or UP crew stuck with CN units in the Monjove.

CN units (dash 9s) do not have air conditioning . The colder canadian climate makes them useable for a very short time. CN saved the cash. The ex IC engines SD70s SD40-2 are getting AC as they spend much time down south.

You mean the ILLINOIS CENTRAL SD70s and SD40-2. They are not ex IC until they paint them in CN colors.

The usual air conditioning on CN locos is an open nose door!

I feel sorry for the crews even on the corridor through Ontario. I've been trackside in July and August, when it's often 35Celsius or more. It does get hot up here, albeit not for as long as in the south.

Unit I was on not only had a/c but a refrigerator, coffee pot, microwave and upholstered seats. It was quite comfy.

If that is true why does the engine keep working when the AC is turned off or broken down?
