UPY 2300 -- A New Breed Of Loco

Last night I saw something a little different, it was UPY2300. This is a new unit, a GG20GE.

At this time here is the only info I can find on it.

To me this thing looks like the MKs that Ed uses. But I believe the "insides" are a little more environmentally friendly.

Jim, it's basically another Green Goat. But instead of being built on the frame of an old Geep, as the previous units have been, it was built using a U30B (IIRC). Hence the larger size, the trucks, the designation (Green Goat, 2000 horsepower, on a GE frame.

As mentioned elsewhere, the Green Goat is an old concept (1920's-1930's) that has been updated and re-marketed. Interestingly enough, MPI has agreed to act as a subcontractor for Railpower Technologies for building Green Goats.

The new concept from Railpower is their road-switcher designs. They are rated at 2000 hp each. One consists of two 667 hp diesel/generator sets and a battery set and the other consists of three 667 hp diesel-generator sets. I would assume that they are quick-start designs and only enough engines are on line at any given time to provide the appropriate horsepower needed.

National Railway Equipment has also dusted off and upgraded an old idea with its truck-engine diesel (UPY 2005). It looks like an enlarged twin-engine industrial design similar to what GE and others sold to steel mills, quarries, etc.
The daily commute is part of everyday life but I get two rides a day out of it. Paul

I am not sure if the UPY2300 will be staying here or not. I kind of think it might but I will know more in a few weeks.
