This forum needs to be one where you can read all messages at once.....not by having to click a link every time to keep on reading down through the posts.

you got that right, chris-o! i wrote to "them" and suggested that there should "next" and "previous" buttons next to the "reply" button.. it's certainly a drag to have to click on a contribution, scroll down to the letter, read it, and scroll to the top to clck on the next contribution.. having made such an effort to get the forum site this far, it wouldn't require a lot more to add some "convenience" aspects to the system, huh, guys??

Both of you guys are right-on in my opinion, but after considering that we get this site for "free", don't hold your breath waiting for major changes to happen.

...You have identified a needed improvement. I don't know what resources it requires but it sure would simplify the operation of going to the next post, etc...

I agree, it would make the site faster and easier to use but Jim also raises a valid point.

I am really in favor of a next button. In addition, if they are going to have the "great computer" censor your postings, they need to post a list of the verboten words.

you're right, but is isn't always specific to words.. it's about references to the traditional "race, color, creed, religion or country of origin", which all of us have..

it can be specific when it involves attributes: criticizing someone's poor grammar in postings; when it involves bodily fluids or wastes; when it involves bodily functions; when it involves particular organs of a human or animal;

it usually involves an attitude, which can be insulting without any four-letter words.. if the usual offending phrases are absent, the attitude comes across in viewing the total communication: helpful, curious, joking, indifference, sarcastic, mocking, etc.

where one use of a foul term might be cause for stripping a contributor of membership, it may take a series of letters from someone who is subtle in the use of language, but contemptuous toward others and equally as undesirable as the former..

like any concept which is subjective in definition, we cant say what it is, but we know it when we see it.. one person decides on behalf of the group what is or what isn't; and what is marginal, but shouldnt be repeated..

Next button would be nice. Haven't seen much in the way of censorship here. There have been a lot of posts that I was surprised to see left intact so they apparently have to get pretty nasty before the powers take action.

Are you serious?

Yes. Read Ed's post to the editor from last week when a certain party started getting pretty personal and he felt strongly enough about it to complain.

Amen to that, it takes way too long to read through all the posts in a discussion thread..........

If you check out the Kalmbach site for Fine Scale Modeler, you will see the system that will be used to upgrade the Trains.com forums in the future.

http://www.finescale.com/fsm/community/forum/

Should be a huge improvement.
