Train scare in San Diego
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, July 9, 2005 12:47 PM
Hey,
Did you hear about the train scare in San Diego? I think there was a BNSF freight that was idling and looked suspicious. Officials found a note saying that the crew had reached the "dead on the law" (max hours: 12) and took a taxi.

I wouldn't be surprised if the governemnt will blow this out of proportion, just to appease the public. I'm not saying it will happen, I'm just saying I wouldn't be surprised.

MSTS might give you an "idea" on how to run an engin..but it will NEVER teach you how to run a train!!!

As I understand it, you couldn't drive a properly parked (as in, the departing crew had followed all the official proceedures) loco using your Train Sim skills - there's more to it than the controls in the game. MS deliberately left out some aspects of the electrical system and some proceedures (such as location of removable controls) in order to prevent their being accused of teaching people how to steal or hijack the real thing (after their experiences with Flight Sim when post 9/11 some dubious sections of the media claimed that the game was being used as a terrorist training aid). I know that on at least one MSTS loco I've "driven" there's a lot more to it than the game shows - was able to find out the rest with a little research but there's no way a casual gamer could hop onto a parked train and drive it away.
