Posted by trainster1073 on Saturday, July 9, 2005 12:26 AM
I just was wondering what other people thought of EMD's SD70ACe?
Personally I think it is really Awesome. I just like the look of it it looks big and bulky thats why I think it looks so cool. Thanks for your opinion!!!

I agree with the big/bulky comment .I think they look pretty cool. The first time I saw one was a CSX unit running light thru my town. I like the square look in the front of the nose. Also the cleaner emissions and fuel savings for the railroads is a good thing.

Just my 2, but I think the're ugly.
I much prefer the 2 piece windshields and the smooth angular features on the SD-70M. And the flared radiators (to me) look much better at the ends of the unit.
Probably more crew friendly with what looks like a taller nose door, and that's very important, but for better or worse, they just dont look like EMD's to me.

It is the future!! They have to meet all those emmisions standards. So they had to do something. But it is a nice looking engine and form the stats on it , it sounds like it will be arond for a long time. Still would like to see a 6000hp in a package like that. Can you just feel the rumble of three of these pulling a coal drag up a 1% grade? KEEP TRAIN'IN STEVE

They look like a mini SD90 but with really shrill horns; at least some of them. Very cool looking. Can't wait to see them in Montana Rail Link colours.

Well, I think the nose is ugly for 2 reasons. GE windshields(and they have enough room to put F45 windshields like all the other SD70Macs, and such, but they chose not too, which pisses me off) and what the hell is with the little chops in the nose. It doesnt help anything, and to me, railroads dont know STYLE anymore. I think they look ok , i like how they made the back end better, but the nose HAS to go, or atleast put in EMD windshields.

Flared Radiators if my memory serves me correct (I'm not that old I just can't Remember but a Flared radiator is when it sticks out from the body of the Engine. Coborn35, I am in the same boat as you are I REALLY want to see one too. (The race is on!!!)

I agree it looks big and bulky, almost too bulky. I have seen 2 of these in UP paint and they were shiny and fast, call me crazy but I like the old cabs better.
they lack something, it looks like the original model was made with Legos, and what is that on the hood it looks like a crazy new hood ornament, perhaps it makes more head room in the toilet area. LOL

anyway... as long as it rides on steel wheels and rails I don't mind the looks.

I like the new styling EMD has come up with. I think I like it best in the demonstrator paint scheme. And to think, UP had to derail their demo model.

My opinion is that they are [xx(][xx(][xx(] (especially in CSX colors); the UP ones look a little better.

[:(!]The SD70ACE (and SD70M-2) look like they fell from the top of the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down. They look really GHEY...

Also what was it that the evil EPA mandated that made them do away with the regular SD70M? I know it had to do with emissons standards, but WHY?

I think the new units wouldn't look as bad with those F-ed up windshields and noses...yech. Totally not EMD.

I've seen quite a few on the UP at Rochelle IL. I like the looks.

I did notice that these units were not on point. Does anyone know why not?

Thanks!

I'd like to take two in IHB orange, they would make terrific transfer power and four in BRC black and grey where they would be just dandy on Clearing's hump

Ed,
Why can't you use them for switching. My local CSX yard has been using one for the past several days to do yard switching and some of the local runs. Of course, this is the same bunch that used an SD80MAC for two weeks for locals and switching.[:)]

I don't think this demonstrator is the final EMD word on looks. It looks unfinished to me, not up to EMD's normal standard of everything in the right place. Look at the obviously test cable above the trucks and the fact that you can see into the main frame almost recessed to be just abe the rails. I'm sure the production models will look much better.

Why didn't they just call it an SD70MACe? Isn't that realy what it is?

I don't absolutely hate them but I'm not crazy about them. They seem to have some of the worst design features of earlier EMD's and of GE locos. What can one say when the most "exciting" design element are the louvered ventilators??

Maybe the 7 big roads' paint jobs will evolve in a way that will make that blockiness more acceptable -- or soften the effect of all that right-angle thrust. I hope so!

The looks and blockiness aren't that bad. Of course, this is coming from a guy who believes that the appearance of standard-nose Dash-8 would be improved by the addition of a pantograph.

I don't think they're terrible looking, but they aren't great either. The worst part is that this might be the beginning of a trend towards practicality, where they eventually end up looking like a big box. They're already doing it with the international stuff... Look at the GT46MAC.

I belive the chops in the nose are so the crew in the cab can see the switchman standing on the front of the locomotive. A usefull purpose.[8D]
