Hey Typan,
Whats the name of the rr that run through what looked like a really barren place, with a straight track for about 400 miles? I caught the tail end of a documentry about it, and it seemed like the track never ended. Tasmaina Express? or what? And your right, USA isnt the only country with a rail industry. Ever ride the bullett train in japan?. You know what I tell my kids when they complain about nothing being on TV? Well, you can always turn it off.

Hi again ED.
The RR you are thingking of runs through the NULLARBOR PLAIN. And is the longerst strate section of track in the world, the only bend is the curve of the Earth. This line runs from the East coast to the West. Apart from freght the only Train that runs it is called, obversly, The Indian Pacific. Which runs from Sydney NSW the Perth WA.

Can't say i have been to Japan, But would love to go to Europe or the US just to ride some of the famous RRs.

C U Around.

If you go to Japan, dont ride the bullet on a work day, that thing is jammed packed to the brim. They have rr employees whos only jobs is to pack the people into the cars, shoving and pushing them in like sardines. I was about to take a swing at one when he shoved me into the car, but my friend explained. Seems thats just about the only public transportation into Tokyo and the surrounding area, and the sheer volume of people comuting to work required that the trains are packed to capacity. She said Sunday was the least busy. We were riding on thursday am from my friends home to her job, and they were running the trains on a five minute headway. Wow, talk about faith in the system..I want to do the chunnel and the TGV next chance I get. By the way, my niece lived in your country for two years, she worked for your goverment on some type of ecological project, counting whales. She said except for the USA, if she had to live anywhere else but Texas, she would want to live there.
Be safe,
Ed

Hey again Matt,
Just remebered something you might think about.
Check with The Society of International Railway Travlers, 1810 Sils Axenue, Louisville, Kentucky, USA, 40205. (web site www.irtsociety.com)
They may offer group discounts on rail trips.
If so, you may get to ride some of those trains you read about....
Hope this help,
Ed
