Does anyone know if there are still training opportunities/locations where a person can learn (either by paying for training, or through volunteer work) to become registered to operate a full-sized steam locomotive?
Thanks!

Yes, in different places and museums. Check with the Valley RR in CT. I hear they have both a steam fireman's program and a steam locomotive engineer's program. They also have the "Engineer for a day" type program with a steamer twice annually.
