Yellow and Vermillion (Ginger ?) cats roamed from Newark and Newport News to Chicago and St.Louis. Back to back birthdays for Sarah ! Over Memorial Day weekend, I caught an eastbound U.P. manifest west of Tucson with an untouched Chessie System three-bay covered hopper with CSXT reporting marks. Unfortunately, I didn't have my camera handy to get a shot.

When did the Chessie become CSX? Sometime in 1987?

CSX was formed Nov.1, 1980. For the first several years the Seaboard siden and the Chessie side were operated mostly as independent roads with limited coordinated projects. Begining in 1985 the edict came from Richmond (CSX Headquarters) fully merge the operations, thus CSXT was formed and became the reporting marks.

Never too old to have a happy childhood!

Chessie had some class and was a good kitty. CSX? Just three letters thrown together. Now, we've got BNSF imitating them. I prefer REAL names.

CSX was originally intended to a be a parent company with Chessie and Family Lines as separate but co-ordinated operations and the parent would have remained relatively invisible. Apparently, the CSX initials-only arrangement was adapted in response to favorable public comment. It also provides a single public image rather than the dual Chessie/Family Lines appearance.

As long as this post was brought up again, here are the dates:

11/01/1980: CSX Corporation created by merger of parent companies Chessie System, Inc., and Seaboard Coast Line Industries.

?/1982 or 83: Seaboard System created by merger of SCL, L&N, A&WP, WofA.

07/01/86: Name of Seaboard System Railroad changed to CSX Transportation, Inc.

04/30/87: B&O and WM merged into C&O.

08/31/87: C&O merged into CSXT.

10/10/91: RF&P merged into CSXT.

I've been thinking about this for years now ...

I hope you know what the current CSX logo looks like ...

Anyway where the "C" is use the Chessie "C" instead ...

The "X" should get some sort of upgrade as well ...

"There is nothing in life that compares with running a locomotive at 80-plus mph with the windows open, the traction motors screaming, the air horns fighting the rush of incoming air to make any sound at all, automobiles on adjacent highways trying and failing to catch up with you, and the unmistakable presence of raw power. You ride with fear in the pit of your stomach knowing you do not really have control of this beast." - D.C. Battle [Trains 10/2002 issue, p74.]

Nothing like resurrecting an old thread. And discovering that I posted to it myself. May Chessie live on in our collective memories.[^]
