Loaded HD Rail Flats - Nevada
Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, June 12, 2005 1:33 PM
Thought a few would find this of interest. In my travels yesterday in western Nevada spotted 5, 8axle, heavy duty flat cars with loads at Wunotoo, NV – MP 260.2. This is the spur that serves Sierra Pacific Power Company’s Tracy power plant, which is located on Union Pacific’s Nevada Sub between Patrick (MP 257.3) and Clark, Nevada (262.1).

Three of the five flats belonging to TTX; QTTX 131030, QTTX 131034 and QTTX 131039 – the other two are Kasgro “Red’n Ready” flats; KRL 70925 and KRL 70946.

The flats are loaded with five Wartsila Natural Gas internal combustion engines, one per car. Each engine/generator set will develop 8.2 MWs and will be a part of Barrick’s Western 102 Power Project which is now under construction at McCarran, NV about a ½ mile east on Waltham Way from where the flats are spotted. Once completed, this project will have 14 of these engine/generator sets.

The loads were set out at Wunotoo Thursday night, June 9th. Unloading of these 5 rail flats is scheduled to begin Monday June 13, 2005. It should be a real show.

Follow this link for 3 photos of the loaded cars:

It's always interesting to see how large an engine can get when it's built for stationary or marine service. I'm assuming that these are diesels modified to burn natural gas and their specs should be interesting.
The daily commute is part of everyday life but I get two rides a day out of it. Paul

Yes, from what I understand they are modified diesel engines that burn natural gas. I'm hoping to get out that way Wednesday and catch them unloading one of those monsters. If it works out I'll post some photos.

Today, June 15th was able to get out to Wunotoo, NV (MP260.1) on Union Pacific’s Nevada Sub east of Sparks, NV to watch Intermountain Rigging & Heavy Haul unload a Wartsila engine/generator set.

After arriving they were just finishing up cutting the unit from heavy duty flat KRL 70925. After lunch, they were ready for the lift, after lifting the Wartsila engine/generator set off the flat the car was pulled out of the way. Next the heavy haul rig, a Bigge company unit, was backed in under the engine/gen set. After lowering the engine/gen set on the heavy haul road combination, it was chained to the platform. Ready for the haul, the rig with load head out towards the construction site at walking speed.

It turned out to be very interest watching them work on this move. For photos follow these links:
