Keeping Track of Track.
Posted by nanaimo73 on Friday, June 3, 2005 10:21 AM

Two weeks ago I posted that Dakota, Minnesota and Eastern was using the former Milwaukee Road to reach Aberdeen, SD. I got an e-mail saying DME was only using ex C&NW track. Then I hit delete instead of reply.Whoops.I thought I would just cover this and some other messes that RRs can cause. The Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul built into SD from Minnesota over 100 years ago. They went through Aberdeen on their way to Tacoma. They also had a line running south af Aberdeen through Wolsey and into Iowa at Sioux City. The Chicago and North Western built across SD as well, through Huron and Wolsey and Rapid City. They had a line north of Huron to Aberdeen running beside the Milwaukee line. The lines crossed in Redfield. Between 1973 and 1984 the C&NW got trackage rights over the Milwaukee from Wolsey to Aberdeen, so they could abandon the north and south ends of their line and keep the Redfield to Mansfield middle section. In 1980 the Milwaukee sold the line south of Aberdeen to the state, who leased it to BN. During 1986 the C&NW sold their lines to the DME. Now BNSF is buying the line from the state, so DME is using C&NW's rights on the CMSP&P over BNSF.
Over in Missouri, the Milwaukee built into Kansas City through a place called Polo. The Rock Island built around Kansas City at first, and then built a line into KC also going through Polo. Later on these two decided to enter a joint track arrangement from Polo to KC. After 1980 the C&NW bought the CRI&P line and in 1986 the Soo Line got the CMSP&P line. Then the Soo sold the Chicago to Kansas City line to Southern Pacific, but the C&NW stopped the sale because of the paired track deal. After UP got the C&NW, Soo (or CP) sold the line to I&MRL, which then sold the line to ICE.
In Illinois, we talked about the Alton line from St. Louis to Chicago that the Baltimore and Ohio had which then became GM&O and then ICG and then CM&W and SP and now UP.
In Montana the UP built between Butte and Garrison and then sold the line to NP which became BN. BN sold the line to Montana Western and now BNSF has bought it back.
It is hard keeping track of track.

Now you know why the STB is still around and one of its primary functions: scorekeeper.

It gets even better when leases and subleases are involved. My favorite example of this is the South Shore Line between Kensington and the Illinois-Indiana state line.
1. The trackage is owned by the Kensington & Eastern RR, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Illinois Central RR.
2. Kensington & Eastern leases this track to the Indiana & Kensington RR, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the South Shore Line.
3. Indiana & Kensington in turn subleases this track to South Shore Line for operation.

This whole set-up was prior to Venango River's purchase of South Shore Line, so I'm not sure of the current situation.
The daily commute is part of everyday life but I get two rides a day out of it. Paul
