Posted by bobwilcox on Wednesday, June 1, 2005 3:52 PM
As reported in today's SF Chronicle

BIAGGINI, Benjamin Franklin - Born April 15, 1916, in New Orleans, LA. He attended St. Mary's University in San Antonio, Texas, graduating summa***laude. While there he was vice president of the Rattler Club, captain of A Company ROTC Cadet Battalion and president of the Student Council. He began his 47-year railroad career in 1936 with Southern Pacific Lines in Texas and Louisiana (the former Texas & New Orleans Railroad) as a rodman in Ennis, Texas. Ben, as he was known to all when he moved to San Francisco with his family in 1956, was then vice president, Southern Pacific Company. In 1964 he was named president and director, Southern Pacific Company. From there he also became chairman and chief executive officer. He continued to lead Southern Pacific until his retirement in 1983. When asked if there is a secret formula to professional success, his reply was: "Success is based upon hard work and determination. There is no easy answer." Ben achieved great success professionally, gave to his community and country through his many civic endeavors and was always there for many individuals and institutions providing wise counsel and assistance throughout his life. Ben was a man of great achievement and a most generous heart - a leader, a mentor and a good friend to many. Ben enjoyed life, particularly fishing, duck hunting, golf, dominos and being with his good friends. He also loved to travel and was always ready to sing a song or tell a joke. Ben is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Anne Payton Biaggini; two daughters, Connie Biaggini (Guittard), Anne B. Krattebol and husband, David; sister, Margaret Ellen Lundell and son, Harry; three granddaughters, Tanya Arianne Malott, Lara Conte and husband, Fred, and Kimberly Krattebol; and three great-grandchildren; Cole Conte, Samantha Conte and Alexander Lawson. Friends are welcome to visit from 10 to 12 Noon on Monday, June 6th at HALSTED N.GRAY-CAREW & ENGLISH , 1123 Sutter St. There will be private family services. A Memorial Service will be held Wed, June 15, 2005 10:00 am at Grace Cathedral, California at Taylor St. In keeping with Ben's strong commitment to education and medical research, in lieu of flowers a contribution may be made to an educational/ medical institution of one's choice. I'd have to go back and look, but I believe Mark Hemphill interviewed Mr Biaggini for the article on The Southern Pacific that was done for the Trains '70s issue a few months back. Given all the circumstances of the time, he had a very tough job at the top of the SP. It is clear that he was a person of great character and in spite of a career that demanded a great deal, remained in good spirit to the end of his days.

Condolences are extended to the family.

I dont know which poster it was, but a few months ago he told of being at a fly fishing camp and Mr. Biaggini basically told him to change careers. That to me was a very telling story.

He knew the writing was on the wall for SP. Mark's excellent article and Fred Frailey's Blue Streak Merchandise should be required reading for those interested in the recent history of the Southern Pacific.

Reading some stuff about the SP, he certainly had his work cut out for him. Not sure how he managed the railroad as well as he did.
